Laird Secures Conviction in Hulse Case

Defendant Guilty of Murder by Aiding Outlaw

The court indicated the strongest prosecution hope rested on proof the defendant aided and abetted outlaw James McKinney. If jurors believe McKinney was a Tulare County and Arizona murderer fleeing justice, harbored him, aided him in a room, and furnished guns, and that McKinney killed officer William E. Tibbet, then the defendant is guilty of murder as charged.

Democratic State Central Committee Elects New Chairman

Tim Spellacy of Kern county was chosen chairman after a heated meeting in San Francisco on June 18. Barney Murphy of San Jose led protests over who could preside and whether proxies and delegate certificates from the state convention should be filed. The committee debated membership and the legitimacy of the roll before selecting T. M. Spellacy as permanent chair.
