Special dispatches report five explosions at Count Larisch’s coal mines in Austrian Silesia. About 200 miners died, many more entombed as the mines burned. A rescue team perished as darkness and flames hampered efforts.
The Los Angeles sheriff’s office received an order by Judge Smith to bring to the city men Shulters and Simon, each serving five-year sentences in San Quentin for burglary, with Shulters to be tried for involvement in the first Roscoe train robbery and Simon reported to have supplied damaging evidence and may testify. Also, in London, the Macdonough versus Ross case over a racehorse purchase was amicably settled, with Macdonough paying Ross 2000 for services and withdrawing the complaint.
Special committee favors an appropriation of 10000 dollars to aid weak jurisdictions. Chicago June 15 The Inter Ocean says Secretary Gresham is a candidate for the Illinois Populists for United States Senator to succeed Senator Cullom. Simmler June 11 At a May 26 meeting a People's Party Club formed with 27 members. Community details include remarks on reform and party shifts. Bakersfield notices include local meetings and real estate ad.
Delegates chosen at Armory hall after a morning session led by S C Smith elect committees on credentials and order. D M Pyle named secretary as lists of delegates from Havilah to New River were read and approved. Resolutions supported tariff protection, immigration restrictions, and reelection of Perkins. endorsements for Conklin and Smith were carried. Delegates to state, congressional, and judicial races named for Kern County.
