Noted Veteran Colville Dies in Minnesota Home

MINNEAPOLIS Minn June 13 Colonel Wm Colville of Red Wing Minn who led the famous charge of the First Minneapolis regiment at Gettysburg was found dead in bed at the Minnesota Soldiers Home He was 72 He was to take part in the reunion celebration of the regiment The First Minnesota led by Colville in the latter part of the war was the first regiment offered for the Civil War At Gettysburg 264 men were in a historic charge Forty three returned alive and uninjured Colville who led was wounded seven times.

Cheesebrough Refrains From Comment in Mine Assault Case

Deputy Sheriff Ed McGinnis and Oscar Cheesebrough arrived in Bakersfield to face an alleged assault with a deadly weapon at the Magpie mine shaft. Cheesebrough refused to speak to a Calfornian reporter, stating he would wait to consult his attorney before commenting. He did not identify his attorney or provide further remarks.

Veterans injured in railway wreck at Golden Gate

A special Southern Railway train carrying Confederate veterans to a Louisville reunion plunged from a bridge over the Little Wabash River near Golden Gate Illinois. Engineer William Gratz was killed and fireman J D Johnson missing. Reports said seven passengers may have died. a relief train with surgeons was sent to aid the injured. Local reports add one killed and five injured in a wreck shortly after Golden Gate with engine leaving the track and buried fireman.

Congressional irrigation junket shifts to San Joaquin Valley

Pressure from across the San Joaquin valley forces the congressional committee examining irrigation in the west to alter its itinerary. After previously planned stops in Imperial, southern California, San Francisco, Sacramento, and Reno, the group will now visit Fresno Merced and Stanislaus counties for a day and inspect the valley’s projects and water use.

Provisional Norwegian government not recognized by Sweden

Stockholm reports Foreign Minister Gyldenstolpe issued a circular to consuls stating that after the Norwegian Storthing formed a provisional government and declared the union with Sweden dissolved, Sweden will not recognize the provisional regime. Consuls are instructed to continue constitutional duties and not communicate with the Norwegian government, seeking Foreign Ministry guidance in emergencies.
