California Assembly Passes $500,000 State Building Bill

Sacramento June 11 The assembly met all morning while the Senate met in the afternoon. The bill providing $500,000 for a state building in San Francisco passed after debate. Interior members opposed a constitutional amendment allowing San Francisco and San Jose to charter changes without legislative approval for two years, amended to require a three fifths majority by the people, approved 55 to 10. The assembly anticipates more measures to pass tonight, with lingering business tomorrow morning. Addresses by Rolley and Hauser favored higher appropriations to 750,000 or 1,000,000.

Derailment near Martin City claims engineer life

An eastbound Missouri Pacific passenger train derailed near Martin City Missouri twenty miles from Kansas City. Engineer John Donovan of Kansas City was killed and fireman H Forstund was seriously injured. The incident is suspected to be an act of wrecking.

Invaders defeated at Mongoy en in Honduran border clash

A cablegram from the Guatemalan foreign affairs ministry reports a crushing defeat of revolutionaries who crossed the Honduras boundary and their Salvadorean frontier counterparts. The action occurred at a location named Mongoy en and streets. The vote on the measure was close, shifting from no to aye, final tally 6 to 7.

Smoot Case Pushes Senate Split Over Utah Seat

Washington June 11 The Senate heard both majority and minority reports from the privileges and elections committee on Reed Smoot of Utah. The majority, led by Senator Burrows, says Smoot is not entitled to his seat, while the minority, led by Senator Foraker, takes the opposite view. Senator Bailey also spoke, agreeing with the majority on Smoot’s lack of entitlement.

River rising threats flood in Kern river region

The Kern River flood nears May highs as snowmelt feeds rising waters through Kern Valley. At Canyon, water stood 6 feet 10 inches noon today, within inches of May’s peak, with expected further increases from warm weather. Attack on Dillonvale coal company house

An attack likely by strikers fired fifty shots at the M A Hanna Coal Company check house in Dillonvale Ohio from a hill 200 feet away. Four watchmen inside escaped injury as company officials, meeting with the mayor, organized a defense party. No company fire was exchanged and strikers refused to return to work. Miners stand firm on the 1903 wage scale.

Two Mutual Life Men Indicted by New York Grand Jury

Dr Walter L Gillette and Robert A Granniss formerly vice presidents of Mutual Life Insurance Company were indicted for forgery and perjury by a special New York grand jury investigating insurance matters under District Attorney Jerome. Gillette is accused of making false statements in the grand jury room with five forgery counts alleged.

Electric car runs away on Haight street in San Francisco

A electric car on the Haight street line broke from the motorman and sped down Masonic avenue until overturning at Page street. Three of the six passengers were injured, including Miss Agnes Cannon, Miss Rose Crosby, and W. F. Elliott. The vehicle pinned a hydrant, spraying water, and the group was removed to Park Emergency Hospital with severe contusions and lacerations after rescue.

Rail rebates case dismissed in Kansas City court

In U S District Court Kansas City on June 11 the cases against the Chicago and Alton and the Chicago St Paul railway for granting export shipment rebates and against D H Kresky a local freight broker for conspiracy to obtain rebates were dismissed at the suggestion of District Attorney A L Van Valkenburgh. A man and two boys riding on the outside of a car along with the motorman and conductor escaped injury by leaping clear just before the car overturned.
