Witness May Have Given A Clue In Explosion Case

Victor Colo June 10 The jury hearing testimony on the Independence explosion heard from C C Hathaway a carpenter living within 300 feet of the blast He said he hurried to the scene and asked a man what was the matter The reply was Oh nothing only a lot of scabs going to hell He did not know the man but later heard him repeat the words to another person The man was identified as Joe Craig.

Ochoa Hanged After Deliberate Refusal To Show Fear

Francisco Ochoa was hanged at San Quentin for the 1899 murder of Marie Berera in Bakersfield. He mounted the scaffold unaided and ducked his head into the noose, the drop in 21 seconds. The execution drew about 20 witnesses as Rev Father Valentine administered last rites and Hangman Arbogast performed the role. Ochoa, aged 40, maintained the killing was not premeditated and had received a reprieve from May 27 to today despite Mexican consul efforts.

Robbers Split After Rail Car Heist Near Parachute

Two fugitives escaped overnight from a Garfield Creek canyon ambush after dynamiting an express car on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad near Parachute Colorado. Bloodhounds aided the chase. the dead man was J H Ross and the two survivors are believed to be John Emmerling and Charles Scrubbs both former railroad section men who quit last week.

June 10 report from Hai Maichi says a Japanese detachment routed a Russian battalion, with Japanese losses at four killed and six wounded and Russian casualties ranging from 70 to 80 killed or wounded.
