A clash described as a glove contest at Scribner's Opera House faces legal hurdles. Officials warn no license exists from county supervisors and a sheriff may halt the exhibition, as state law imposes heavy penalties for prize fights.
Report of the sheriff's office for 1900 lists 965 prisoners confined, 26 held for superior court, 15 sent to Folsom and San Quentin, 14 to Napa and Stockton asylums, 1 to Whittier state school, 765 from Bakersfield, 75 Tehachapi, 14 Delano, 33 Mojave, 1 Mc Kittrick, 45 Kern City, 8 Kernville, 14 Randsburg. 135 civil actions on fee book. Also notices for American Union Fish Company at 1709 1711 Chester Ave. and D. L. Philips poultry remedies. date Jan. 26.
Eight smallpox cases reported today with four in Kern city and four on Union avenue near Lindgren place. All cases are very mild and none bedridden. Two distinct sources of infection identified: one linked to Kern Palace lodging house and a separate introduction from New Whatcom, Washington via a Penland family member. Names Farrer and Penland family appear among those infected.
Superintendent Coub conducts the semi annual apportionment with county funds totaling 25 501 dollars and state appropriation around 18 000 dollars. Special funds include Bakersfield 1559 18 and Blake 4 80.
The Buena Vista district has received 1300 dollars as insurance for a building that burned down last fall.
The Native Sons masquerade ball at Scribner s on New Year s night promises to be the season s event with Newman s celebrated orchestra providing music. A costumer will be at the Southern on Monday and Tuesday next to prepare attendees.
The marriage of H. H. Fillmore of Arroyo Grande and Verna Foust took place Christmas day at the bride’s parents home on the Weed Patch. Rev. G W Goodell officiated and many friends attended. A large list of valuable presents was received. The couple will reside in Arroyo Grande.
On New Year’s Eve the midnight service begins at 11 p m with a high celebration of the Holy Eucharist. New Year’s Day features Matins and a sermon at 11 a m.
County Recorder Lee plans to compel a crowd expected at his office Wednesday morning to form in lines to improve crowd control and speed up service for the public and clerks.

The first Santa Fe Limited, the companys last daily service between San Francisco and Chicago, arrived from the east yesterday and was taken out of Bakersfield by Conductor James Anderson who also ran the first Valley road train into Bakersfield.
