A sensational dispatch from Tokio reports a seaman’s letter from the Sevastopol detailing dire port conditions at Port Arthur. Russians resist to the end amid starvation, wrecked ships, and fading defenses as Japanese forces close in.
The Boston-Elevated Railway tunnel linking Boston and East Boston began public service today. It is 1.4 miles long with 2700 feet under harbor waters, cost 3 million dollars, built in four years by the city and leased for 25 years to the Boston Elevated Railway Company. The concrete structure, unique worldwide, places stations near the Massachusetts State House and Scollay Square.
The Colorado Supreme Court granted Alva Adams a petition to open all Denver ballot boxes and conduct a full fraud investigation. Two experts will examine ballots and books at the county courthouse under a court referee’s supervision to determine who should hold the governorship amid contested results and alleged precinct fraud. In Se Fe and nearby FalIs River Mass a majority of the cotton mill unions voted today to keep the strike going. Five textile unions met in separate halls to decide and the overall tally stood 1401 in favor and 420 against continuing the protest.
Rihlung fort, the eastern fort ridge at Port Arthur, fell after mines blasted its walls. Two tons of dynamite were used, half the garrison killed in the initial explosion, and the Russians resisted. Four heavy guns seven rapid fire guns two machine guns and 80 quick fire guns were captured.
Shanghai telegrams report the Taotal at Pekin demanding a response from the Russian consul over the surrender of a sailor from the cruiser Askold who killed a Chinese man on the Bund on December 15 during a dispute over jinriksha hire. If refused, China warns of a breach of neutrality and possible testing of Russians in Chinese harbors by Japanese forces. The Taotai also restricts escape attempts by the Askold and torpedo boat destroyer Geozovock as rumors rise of their intent to join the Russian Pacific squadron.
A presidential commission to investigate Standard Oil operations will reach California soon to probe refining and piping works at Point Richmond and other oil fields. Producers claim prices have been pushed down by the trust, with fuel oil in California selling at 18 to 20 cents a barrel, and Associated Oil acting as the sole buyer. The probe aims to expose monopolistic schemes and railroad ties to the trust as politics push for enforcement of anti trust laws.
