N Farnum & Company announces a new brick business in Bakersfield with a $16,000 plant loaded for transport to Los Angeles. The facility will produce 40,000 bricks per day on suitable riverfront land, aiming to supply material at lower prices and accelerate city construction. Local businessmen back the venture as an efficient, timely operation.
Fine entertainment at the Scribner opera house last evening featured Mrs. Von Benton in excellent voice delivering her numbers with charm. New arrival Mr. Rosenstadt proved himself a singer of quality, adding to the refined program by the Epworth League.
A warrant was issued this morning for the arrest of the murderer of Martinez EK Salisar after a coroner jury verdict. Officers have not yet found a lead to capture the killer. R K Swayne received two large Alaska bear skins as a gift. The court set aside Teresa O Kelly estate as Thomas O Kelly community property.
Ray Austin escaped a planned hold up when broncho mules he drove bolted at Kern River Bridge. A robber sprang on the team and urged a stop but the mules refused, scattering the would be thief and clearing the path. Austin reached home safely, money intact.
The Christian church ladies host a New Year box social to inaugurate their new hall. Boxes for two with prepared lunches will sell for fifty cents and hot coffee is free. Various games will be played and a pleasant evening is planned starting at 5.
A social solicitation extends to all ladies friendly to the event, asking those the committee may not meet to prepare a box if possible, and to attend despite the oversight, to support the gathering.
The Native Sons hold a masquerade ball at Scribner's on New Year's night. Newman’s celebrated orchestra will provide music. A costumer will be at the Southern on Monday and Tuesday next for attire.
