D H Chalfant, a Greenhorn resident, and R P Jones, ex forest ranger, are accused of burglarizing M P Wilkerson’s mountain cabin. Wilkerson reports missing provisions and furniture and finds Chalfant’s possession includes Chalfant’s whip. Chalfant held on $500 bond. Jones sought by officers on warrant.
Ten year old Richard Swain son of Arthur Swain had a dramatic runaway near the court house when the team spooked by boys on horseback charged through Railroad avenue. Richard escaped with minor injuries by leaping down as the horses crashed into a wagon in the hitching rack. He pledged to make restitution through his uncle for the damaged wagon and harness.
Last night Constable Kett escorted F. Gomez D. Gavora and F. Gorton from Tehachapi to the county jail on grand larceny charges in a cattle stealing case. A head and hide of a beef were found buried near Old Tehachapi, owned by Mrs. F. Godwin, pointing to a gang of five Mexicans. two others will be brought to Bakersfield tonight, with the three in custody likely to testify.
The state supreme court affirmed a lower court ruling upholding T. M. Gleason’s first degree murder conviction for the 1897 killing of D. M. Cotton in Bakersfield, sentencing him to life confinement in San Quentin. The defense argued trial errors and prosecutorial misconduct, but the court found no reversible issues.
