Refining work on Sunset oil wells shows thirty percent of crude becomes top quality lubricating oil and twenty percent cylinder oil, rivaling market leaders. Distillation yields small illuminating oil share and residue forms fine liquid asphalt. This suggests strong commercial value for the Sunset Company’s output.
Evangelist Moody died at noon after a brief illness. Havana reports tidings of his death and an unusual funeral procession with 151 coffins moved to the Magdalena wharf under guard, then loaded aboard steam lighters and the Texas battleship. Christmas turkey sale advertised by Conklin & Baker runs through December 21.
At four oclock this morning a fire alarm rang out for two frame buildings between 60th Street and new China town. The blaze, with good headway, damaged parts of the second building while the cause remains unknown as no residents have lived there recently. The properties belonged to Ping Sun a Chinese merchant. Insurance from Home and Continental bore $250 and $240 respectively.
All are invited to the Salvation Army Christmas tree event on Saturday night December 23 featuring speech and song by children. Local generosity noted with about twenty two dollars and twenty cents raised. Army thanks helpers. Also a brief ad for Syrup of Figs praising mild laxative benefits for children from the California Fig Syrup Co.
