War on trusts debate in Congress over anti trust funds

In Washington on December 17 the House debated an appropriation bill. Bartlett proposed 250000 to prosecute antitrust violators, Hepburn offered 500000. Hepburn’s amendment passed. Andijan Earthquake Destroys Russian City of 30000

On Tuesday in Ashkabad Russian Turkstan the town of Andijan in Ferghana government was totally destroyed by an earthquake. Fatalities unknown, population threatened by starvation. Shocks hit New Marghelan and nearby villages. a railway near Andijan was damaged. Aid is being sent. Andijan, in Russian Central Asia, lies 73 miles from Khok and had about 30,000 inhabitants.

Cable ship Silverton speeds toward Honolulu in fair seas

San Francisco December 17 The cable ship Silverton reports from noon today 455 knots from shore and 8 knots overall average speed since departure from six miles off port at 2 AM Monday. Despite heavy seas decks were swept for 24 hours. Weather now partly clear and pleasant with better seas expected.

Air ship to visit Bakersfield this week amid coast sightings

Word received yesterday confirms the famous air ship is bound for the coast and will be seen in Bakersfield this week unless an accident occurs. The air ship will be exhibited locally and make several trips around the adjoining county with it.

Eagles Seek Bakersfield as State Convention Host

The Fraternal Order of Eagles names officers for the year and votes to petition James F. Cheatham to hold the California State Convention in Bakersfield next January. San Francisco and other cities also seek the event, making a Bakersfield victory notable.

Congregational Bazaar Opens With Home Made Fare

The Congregational church ladies host a yearly sale starting Thursday noon December 18 in the Producers bank basement. Homemade candies and cooking, a range of fancy articles, handkerchiefs, aprons, bedding, and more will be offered, with tea served. Christmas gifts can be found. Colfax in uproar after Greek assault on girl

Reports from Colfax California describe a terror scare after a 15 year old girl Miss May Rowell was attacked by a Greek railroad worker. The mob demanded the attacker’s surrender and threats of dynamite raised fears of bloodshed until Sheriff Kenna intervened. Greeks had been dismissed by the railroad and resisted transport to their colonies. In Gazelle California E B Edson and L M Foulke home burned this morning and Miss E B Foulke died in the fire.
