Los Angeles December 16 Details from the Erkenbrecher syndicate describe a newly acquired 4000 acre land tract about twelve miles west of Santa Monica and north of the Malibu ranch. Reports note live oil seeps and gas indications, with experts predicting light gravity oil suitable for refining if found. Maniac slays man with razor then shoots self

In La Pere Michigan John Best aged 28 attacked Jasper Clegg 60 in his sleep cutting his head nearly off with a razor then wounded his mother and sister before shooting himself dead The attack occurred shortly after 1 am and followed Best being discharged from the insane asylum six months earlier.

Tragic Razor Attack Ends With Self-Inflicted Death

A man raged through his home harming his mother and sister with a damaged razor. Mrs Best barely escaped after a life threatening wound to her chin. The assailant shot at the sheriff, then turned the revolver on himself and died.

Child Abductor Pleads For Time In San Francisco

Frank Parke, charged with child stealing, faced Judge Cabaniss in Police Court. He admitted guilt but sought a brief continuance, claiming intoxication for ten days and that his actions toward 14 year old Tessie Norton were not criminal. The case was continued to tomorrow.

Ah Woy Sentenced for Life to San Quentin

Ah Woy, a convicted Chinese murderer, was sentenced to life imprisonment at San Quentin by Judge Ma hon this morning. No motion for a new trial was filed and the case is considered settled for appeal. He will be transported to San Quentin in a few days.

The coal strike commission opened hearings led by Chairman Gray who praised the endurance of young girls who worked all night and urged a state law banning night work for children. Witnesses cited wages with one girl earning over 1000 and another over 900. John C Haddock of Wilkesbarre testified his South Coal Company assets moved to receivers and trustees in 1913, noting tonnage fixes and pea coal waste, while miners argued middlemen in New York pay 11 to 12 dollars per ton.

Narrow Escape in Post Street Fire in San Francisco

Fire at lodging house 511 Post street trapped several occupants. Mrs Ray Stump fractured her arm leaping from a second story window. Two tenants W Lee and R Gilbert were burned slightly. Mrs Adel Redpath of Seattle was rescued by firemen after directing them from the third floor and climbing down hand over hand as flames scorched her hair and clothing.
