Clinton E Worden purchased three 66 foot lots on the south side of 19th street opposite the Land Company's Building for 10000 dollars in cash. Wm Landess acted as agent and Worden plans rental cottages as temporary residences with movable structures, awaiting business district expansion.
London reports General Buller suffered reverses while trying to cross the Tugela river. He ordered a retirement to avoid greater losses, leaving eleven guns behind and incurring heavy casualties. The news triggers panic in London and a cabinet crisis meeting is convened.
Dr Swartz superintendent of the New Hope oil company was arrested on a warrant for obtaining money under false pretenses. He allegedly cashed a seventy dollar check and several other checks drawn on Kern Valley bank with no funds. The case ties to the City Improvement Company and local office man J M Hunter has one voucher. Swartz declined to speak stating the issue would be straightened out.
Jim arrested for selling lottery tickets failed to appear in Judge Millard's court yesterday. A bench warrant was issued and he was brought before the justice. His case was continued until Monday at 10 o'clock. B. F. Lacy sues Amalie Mining Company to restrain further work at the mine. Byron Jackson sues W. C. Baker to recover 317.86 on a promissory note.
