News update notes continued activity on the Southern Pacific line with crews remaining at work after a daytime report. The Daily Californian provides telegraph updates through 4 o'clock today, detailing ongoing railway operations and any delays or incidents connected to the wreck of the Bark General Butler off the Oregon coast.
A December 16 dispatch notes a secret circular from the Alexander Sullivan wing of Clan Na Gael urging Irish camps in the United States to back physical force after parliamentary agitation fails. It orders fifteen percent of camp funds to a special committee. An officer claims the organization is the strongest, with 20,000 men ready to act. Also reports wheat prices in Chicago and New York, with May wheat around 96 to 108 and barley steadier.
In Philadelphia eight inmates of the Home for Indigent Widows and Single Women have died in recent days from illnesses aggravated by la grippe. This morning Miss Mary McGaw, an inmate weakened by grief and illness, killed herself by cutting her throat.
In Washington on December 16 petitions against opening the World’s Fair on Sundays were presented in the Senate. The requests favored approving the $5,000,000 appropriation but with the condition that the fair close on the Sabbath.
St Paul December reports Thomas A. Oakes of New York president of the Northern Pacific railroad is confined in his room at the Aberdeen hotel. Wires say pneumonia is feared but physicians declare he has nothing worse than a severe cold.
San Francisco December 16 General Manager Towne of the Southern Pacific company said this morning there was no change in the telegraphers situation. None were leaving and there was no fear of a strike.
Avausta Georgia mourns as Henry F Campbell former president of the American Medical Association dies last night at age 67. A renowned physician with wide European repute, he shaped national medical policy and led in clinical advancement.
A west bound fast express derailed near Lima Ohio killing one person and fatally injuring seven others while five more were injured. Investigators opened inquiries into the derailment on December 16.
New York December 16 Cyrus W Field shows no improvement after a relapse triggered by the arrest of his son. The ailing financier remains under observation as medical staff monitor his condition closely.
The Del Norte arrived from Coos Bay with the captain and five crew of the General Butler aboard. The bark, carrying 850,000 feet of lumber from Port Gamble, was hit by a gale on December 3, flooded, and only two boats escaped. One crewman list includes Willoughby and six others. six perished. Bark valued at 20,000 and lumber at 15,000. Also notes House rules committee names at opening.
