Eldridge, Folsom Prison Break Leader, Hanged at State Prison
Harry Eldridge, Oakland born convict once leading the 1908 Folsom prison break and murder of Guard Cotter, died on the gallows at Folsom State Prison at 10 am. He refused priestly ministrations and demanded the death warrant be read. Eldridge aided the break by seizing officials and escaping across Mormon Island bridge before capture and trial.

Nine Die In Fire On Mobile River Boat
Mobile, December 1. Nine men aboard a pull boat on the Middle river between the Tensas and Alabama rivers perished in a fire that destroyed the vessel. Sidney Wheat, the lone survivor, escaped while awake due to illness as the boat collapsed. Owners Steward and Butt said no steam had run the craft for three days, with the cause of the blaze unknown how nine men were dumped into a burning furnace while asleep.
