Mining dispute ends in fatal shooting in Applegate's mountains
Orrin Brown, longtime resident and former Bakersfield figure, was shot and killed by his mining partner W. H. Van Doren after a dispute at Applegate's mine near Onyx. Brown struck Van Doren with a shovel, Van Doren fired in self defense, Brown died about nine hours later. Van Doren surrendered to authorities at Kernville.
