Fourteen anarchists arrested at the immigration bureau in Paris on charges of conspiring to kill President McKinley. Secret Service agents knew of a Naples meeting where eleven Italians and three Austrians were assigned to assassinate the president. Two conspirators were taken from the liner Kaiser Wilhelm, the last of the gang.
Oil fields in McKittrick and Sunset drive land sales at 25 dollars per acre while railroads, notably Southern Pacific and Santa Fe, take a freight toll of 44 cents per barrel to San Francisco. Analysts forecast toll revenue and oil profits could fund a railroad to tidewater within five years.
After extensive legal advice, Deputy City Treasurer Mattson paid the City Improvement company 3000 dollars for street crossing work. The company had previously exacted an indemnity bond of 3590 dollars.
