A dispatch from August eleventh reports the Chinese retreat continues and they will not stand, with allied forces twenty miles from Peking and straining to reach the capital before it is too late.
The Golden Gate has not yet struck rich sands at Monarch but is believed to be drilling a 200+ barrel well. Work paused for 24 hours recently during which the hole filled with oil for about 200 feet.
A noon blaze destroyed a shed used as the boiler repairing department at Canfield & Short machine shops on M and 24th streets. A fuel oil tank burned fiercely, aided by a breeze that spared the main shops. Fire crews arrived within twelve minutes, but the shed and an underground oil tank were lost. Loss estimated in the hundreds of dollars.
Admiral Remey reports to the navy department no word from the front since the 11th. Japanese sources claim allies occupied Tung Chow on the 12th and planned to attack Licking today.
Aug 16 report says Japanese troops seized Tung Chow on the twelfth, ten miles from Peking, capturing a large quantity of arms and great stores of rice. The movement signals advancing force and material gains for the Japanese in the region.
Mr. Locan suffered a ruined suit and burned fingers this afternoon when a pocket full of matches in his hip pocket caught fire on the way to the oil fields. A hole burned through his pantaloons and part of the coat tail was burned away as he tried to smother the flames. He eventually cooled his hands in a nearby horse trough.
A warrant issued by Justice Marion at G. Vassar’s request seeks the arrest of C. Odell for embezzling carpenter tools lent by the complainant. The tools allegedly were sold by Odell without authorization. An obituary notes the death in Bakersfield of the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Abbey, four months old, with funeral arrangements from F. G. Colton’s residence.
Two youths aged twenty one and sixteen from Los Angeles were taken in by Deputy Bill Borgwardt in Bakersfield after running away Sunday. Harry Prager and Charles Humphreys spent $150 and a gold watch they had, with Humphrey’s father arriving to take him home tonight. Prager to be sent home separately. both families are prominent, Prager a capitalist and Humphreys a lumberman.
