The News in Brief reports on a murder charge involving Figer and asks if a pigeon linked to the case originated from Andree. Wheat prices moved up 1 3/4 cents on Liverpool cables, then weakened on bulge selling before rallying. September opened at 84 1/2 cents, traded to 85 3/4, fell to 83 1/2, and recovered to 84 cents amid foreign buying and renewed export demand.
Between 300 and 460 striking miners, led by the G A R of Monongahela Pa, marched to the Buenola mine this morning. The Buenola miners were brought out and the strikers set up a camp to prevent work from resuming.
The preliminary examination of Theodore A. Figel on the charge of killing his employer Isaac Hoffman on June 1 opened before Judge Campbell in San Francisco. Attorney Act outlined the prosecution’s planned proof, detailing the early accounts of Hoffman’s mysterious death and the subsequent inquest. The court later visited the crime scene to view locations mentioned in testimony.
In PrrrspurG August 6, imported miners from Virginia miss the morning arrival at De Armitt's mine. Strikers expand reach as Plum Creek gains 80 workers and Sandy Creek empties. Plum Creek suffers a night riot near the railroaders camp with several shots and three wounded. Judge Semmons delays ruling in riot and unlawful assembly cases.
Seattle reports the April death of miners Charles Blackstone George Bletcher and J W Malinque who went to Alaska in 1806 and froze while returning to Seattle. Blackstone's body was found March 27 but Bletcher and Malinque remain missing after an expedition.
Fire at the Gem Saloon in Battle Mountain swept through the Nevada hotel the Gem Saloon Postoffice Addingtons butcher shop H Paulsons fruit and grocery Blossons warehouse and two vacant buildings causing a total loss of 12000 dollars partly insured with flames starting about 3 a m in Reno Nevada on August 6.
The Gaulois reports a pigeon carrying details of Prof. Andree's balloon expedition was captured at Gradisca near Cortiz, about twenty two miles from Trieste in Austro-Hungary.
The Kern and Tulare Irrigation District applies to the Superior Court for a decree of disorganization. Property sold for delinquent assessments must be redeemed before the decree to avoid loss. Once disorganization is accomplished there is no legal provision to clear titles.
Mrs H L Borgwardt Sr was thrown over the dash as her frightened horse dashed homeward. She escaped with a general shaking up despite the violent fall and her advanced age of sixty six. The buggy was completely demolished.
The railway line at Valley road received eight carloads of timber Thursday morning for the two bridge spans. Each span measures seventy five feet and false work has been set up to support the timbers. Bridge completion will take ten days or more before trains can pass.

The California Supreme Court for the first time holds a wife liable for spousal support. Mary A Livingstone and Limuel W Livingstone, Los Angeles, sought maintenance after age left the husband unable to work. The Superior Court had ordered $24 monthly. she transferred property to a daughter and claimed no funds to comply. The high court affirmed, noting marriage obligations under Civil Code section 155 compel mutual support.
Missouri congressman Champ Clark ridicules the Dingley tariff by recalling a Goodyear tale and a farmer in a western dugout facing high lumber costs. He notes how prosperity rhetoric misleads voters and mocks Iowa's Dolliver on wool and divi-divi on the free list, drawing laughter and applause.

M M Overton proprietor reports stock and fixtures destroyed by fire the morning of the 24th. Temporarily located in Walters Hotel on 6th street ready to serve customers. Around August 6 plans to move to Scribner building near Arlington Hotel with first class retail market and cold storage. Kern Valley Market March 7 31.

Includes endorsements from Rev John Reid Jr of Great Falls and Rev Francia W Poole Helena Montana, and mentions a sample offer for ten cents mailed from 56 Warren Street New York City. Also references Mt Shasta Kidney and Liver Cure and Cope's Tonic Bitters sold by druggists.
