Belfast reports confirm Ulster Volunteer force is being organized as Sinn Fein activity rises. Officials say preparation for possible conflict is underway and Premier Lloyd George hints at a US visit.
In Chicago on October 18 delegates heard President Harding urge plans to regulate coal production and distribution to secure year round employment and curb prices. The 24th annual American Mining Congress opened with focus on the railroad strike, standardization of the mining industry, and a broad program for prosperity by three thousand representatives from mining and machinery sectors.
London date October 18. After a two hour session the Irish conference adjourned with no date for the next meeting. Premier David Lloyd George has many engagements delaying his attendance for several days.
Premier Lloyd George told the House of Commons that he will probably attend next month’s Washington conference. He said all British Dominions will be represented at the talks.
Sir Eric Geddes, the minister at all, has resigned from his post in London as of October. The announcement confirms the cabinet change and paves way for new arrangements in the government.

The House and Senate have approved bills reinstating midshipmen dropped from the Naval Academy for academic deficiencies last year. The measures now go to the President for signature.
Philadelphia October 18 Governor William C Sproul announces State Senator William H Crow of Uniontown as United States Senator to succeed the late Philander C Knox. Crow becomes the successor to Knox in the federal chamber.
Richmond VA October 18 The Old-Time Telegraphers and Historical Association holds its annual meeting in Richmond with about 1200 members led by General Jo Lane Stern. Edison and the late Andrew Carnegie counted among members, many prominent railroad officials attend, and the group notes a rule that officers are chosen from locals hosting the meeting. Stern recalls his teen years on the Chesterfield Station line and a 1862 Confederate telegraph service debut reporting Federal raiders.
President Harding will travel to Williamsburg to deliver the main speech at the inauguration of Dr. J. A. C. Chandler as president of the College of William and Mary. He will also mark Yorktown Day with ceremonies remembering Cornwallis surrender. Governor Westmoreland Davis will preside as students and European university representatives attend.
Congress likely will not investigate the Ku Klux Klan after a House rules committee hearing with Colonel William Simmons. In Chicago the Unity Council, formed to combat the Klan, abandons plans for a national organization and instead will form a national committee to promote kindlier feelings among Americans and end racial and religious animosities.
More than a thousand ophthalmology and laryngology experts from the United States Canada and abroad attend the 26th annual American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology meeting in Philadelphia. Dr Chevalier Jackson of Philadelphia discusses foreign body removal with patient operations to be presented during the sessions.
The House Ways and Means Committee ordered a favorable report on a bill authorizing creation of a committee to arrange funding for foreign debt.
Alaska Day exercises at the high school drew students and visitors who learned of the occasion. Mayor R E Robertson delivered an instructive speech outlining Alaska’s geography, history, and distant Arctic reach, praising the territory’s vast coast line and future potential.
The first sub zero reading of the season hit Tanana this morning at four degrees below zero per Weather Bureau. Two weeks earlier than last year’s zero mark, records show Allakaket reached three below on Oct 4, 1920, with Eagle at two and Fort Yukon four below the following day, signaling a prewinter freeze that halted upper Yukon river traffic.
Two indictments charging grand larceny were returned by the Federal Grand Jury in U S District Court concerning alleged high grading operations at Thane. Fred Mayers and H C C Timmerman were named, with Mayers arrested on a bench warrant and Timmerman rearrested on a bench warrant. Bail was set at 1500 dollars in both cases.
Captain Fred A. Udell retired U S Marines arrives Seattle en route to Juneau to establish a Alaska branch of the Veterans Bureau. Appointed by Col Charles R Forbes to lead and run the bureau's activities in the Territory. Maj George J D Beaumont had earlier discussions in Washington. The Alaska branch will be an adjunct of the Seattle district with Udell as head in charge.
Army executives on the Pacific Coast preparing to take hand in the strike as Cleveland bulletin reports the Big Five Brotherhood chiefs meeting today was canceled after officials were asked to meet the Railroad Labor Board in Chicago next Thursday morning.
President Harding will confer with Secretary of Labor James J. Davis this afternoon about the nationwide railroad strike planned for October 30. Attorney General Daugherty said the Justice Department will not issue statements or discuss the strike at this time.
The Railroad Labor Board summoned three railroad Brotherhood leaders to Chicago for a conference. Officials hope the session marks the board as an effective government agency and advance a freight rate reduction under consideration to be enacted within days.
In San Francisco on October 18 the Ninth Army Corps leaders weighed the army's role if a railroad strike occurs but held no plans for action. General Wright said no special arrangements are planned while Edward McGrath of the Railway Mail Service announced a coast district survey to outline possible measures. He noted plans are tentative but every effort will be made to cope with arising scenarios.
