Republican Senate leaders approve a tentative tax revision package. It includes raising the maximum Blurtax rate to 50 percent, repealing taxes on freight, passenger and Pullman transport, and ending the $2,000 corporate exemption. Estimated yield reaches about $75 million next year with a flat 16 percent corporate tax and new spirits tax.
Bisbee Arizona October 7 The Copper and Truss Research organization formed to create new copper uses aims to absorb a surplus and revive demand. Led by R Agassiz of Calumet & Hecla and including major U S copper firms, the group targets markets such as automotive license plates and highway markers to revive the industry.
In Roseburg Oregon on October 7 defense counsel in the murder case of Dr. Brumfield indicated he would not put Brumfield on the witness stand. A second special venue of 50 has been issued after the first panel was exhausted. Nine men had been tentatively passed. Prosecutors said they expected to fill the jury box before the afternoon adjournment.
Paris dispatch reports the Council of the International Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution urging the United States to join the Allied Powers in plans to address reparations and the repayment of Allied debts.
New York October 7 Justice Finch of the Supreme Court dismissed the divorce complaint by W E Stokes against Mrs Helen Elwood Stokes and sustained her counter claim for separation with alimony and custody of two children The court censured Mrs Stokes for exaggerating cruelty and questioned the Wallace apartment testimony concluding the liaison claims were unsupported by reliable evidence
Urban Ledoux watched half his followers desert before the Capitol as a labor auctioneer sought use of New York National Guard armories for jobless sleeping quarters. Senators Wadsworth and Calder said the issue is for the state. Bud Taylor denounced Ledoux and urged work over show.
The Department of Justice has laid aside for a while the question of a pardon or parole for Eugene V. Debs, according to Attorney General Daugherty. He said recommendations already prepared would be changed in phaseology before reaching President Harding.
LAKEPORT Cal Oct 7 The prosecution in Rev John Spencer murder case closed with District Attorney H B Churchill claiming Spencer offered money or property to drop the charge. Dr W H Fern testified he believed Mrs Spencer was killed before being thrown into the water contradicting drowning testimony.
Washington October 7 The Department of Labor reported September shows a slight U S unemployment decline in 38 cities a 26 percent drop Toledo leads with 24 1 percent Porthind Ore 21 7 Chicago 1 15 New York 2 6 Job gains occur across food production textile manufacturing and many metal stone glass clay lumber and chemical industries railways shops while auto leather paper printing and tobacco sectors show declines
New progress in cancer treatment using radium is reported in New York after Mme Curie’s visit. R J Moore of the U S Bureau of Mines warns treatment requires skilled surgeons and proper dosage for best results. He notes U S production and domestic sourcing, mainly from Colorado, with some recovery from foreign ores.
Chicago Oct 7 The six railroad unions that voted for a general strike over Railroad Labor Board awards will meet next Monday to decide whether to call the strike. L E Shepard head of the Brotherhood of Railway Conductors says a parley may occur as union leaders and railway officials foresee a peace talk with the general chairmen. The railway executive committee will meet next Friday.
In San Francisco on October 7 Dr Gabor Kingstone a fight referee married his third ex wife Ruby Armstrong while simultaneously reaching for his sixth wife Jean Dunbar. The ceremony at a cafe included Reginald Morley as president of the Italian-American Oil Company and Rev John A Saxe presiding. Ruby Armstrong Kingstone was formerly his ward.
Germany will pay the first voluntary national apology to Argentina for the sinking of two Argentine steamships during the war. The ceremony on the battleship Deutschland in the Kiel Canal includes hoisting the Argentine flag by a guard of honor and salutes followed by a banquet.
Mrs Ivy Osborn blamed for the death of her eight month old foster child Helen Marie Wilson after a coroner's verdict cites injury to the head. A grower's jury found death caused by head injury, with one dissenter. Norman Stern testified seeing Osborn strike and toss the baby from a houseboat. Osborn and his wife offered conflicting accounts. Osborn later charged with manslaughter.
New York October 7 final issues in the Stillman divorce case involving James A. Stillman and Anna Urquhart Potter Stillman will be pursued in Paris courts. Stillman plans Paris legal residence and may discuss plans, though his attorneys caution silence to avoid contempt.
In Twin Falls Idaho Dr R Alexander testified in Lyda Southard trial that Edward F Meyers suffered typhoid fever and typhoid pneumonia in April 101% and that Meyers' fatal illness was from some sort of intoxication or poison.
Miss Daisy Dry of Murphysboro, an invalid for six years with paralysis and speechlessness, has recovered. Her physician says the improvement is not from medical treatment. Reverend Haskell T. Abbott, pastor at the First Baptist Church, credits prayers for the recovery.
The Giants end scoring slump with 13 to 5 victory over the Yankees as seven inning rally paves a high run total. Fred Toney planned to relieve early, Barnes and Quinn hold off late Yankee charges, gate receipts set new records.
In Durant Oklahoma on October 7 officers exchanged shots with a group of masked white robed men found gathering in a pasture. No injuries were reported as the group fled. The sheriff said the meeting of masked men was not permitted.
San Francisco October 7 Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle was arrested on a Federal warrant for unlawful liquor possession after his arraignment in Superior Court on a manslaughter charge linked to the death of Virginia Rappe. The proceeding was continued to October 13.
MADISON Oct 7 E A Stoss professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin says the U S population grows from a reduced death rate not higher birth rates He declares support for birth control and cites a shift from his earlier belief in large families amid evolving conditions and deeper study including his use of the term race suicide decades ago.
