Allied forces struck the Alban Hills within 16 miles of Rome as tanks attacked German mobile strongpoints. Headquarters reported three German divisions likely destroyed and more than 15,000 prisoners taken, with Fifth Army pressing toward four Rome line strongholds amid heavy fighting.
General Eisenhower ordered that American Red Cross entertainment centers be opened to all Allied troops during the invasion and that prices be cut to meet the lowest paid soldier. The move aims to ease tensions between American and British troops in England and promote better Allied cooperation as Western Europe lands approach.
Two Coast Guard officers Lt. (jg) Jack E. Shaw and Ensign Aven Anderson and five enlisted men disappeared after going to aid two stranded fishing boats the Toangen and Alaskan near Ketchikan Alaska. A second CG boat searched but found no trace of boat or crew, ten life jackets were later found on shore, and land sea and air search continues.
President Roosevelt has nominated James Vincent Forrestal for Secretary of the Navy and faces praise from Republicans and Democrats alike. Allied troops on Biak Island in New Guinea extend their approach toward Mokmer airfield as Japanese resistance intensifies along Geelvink Bay. Casualties remain light for the landings, while air and naval support destroy enemy planes and bomb the island, with a Thunderbolt shooting down four Zeros and a Liberator force dropping 288 tons of bombs.
Gov Thomas E Dewey opens a Hershey Pennsylvania governors conference with remarks on expressing views on platform matters and his presidential prospects. Delegates tally shows 386 pledged votes for Dewey and 44 for Bricker as Bricker urges discussion of vital issues.
Chungking May 29 The Chinese pursue the retreating Japs who escaped severe losses from the Tatangtzy trap on the Salween front. The town lies 29 miles northeast of Tenchung and a major battle is expected at the pivot of Japanese north Burma road communications.
The first halibut season catch reaches port in Juneau as four vessels return. Captain Dan Twiet of the Valiant brings in 22 000 pounds while Jimmy Marks aboard the Tennessee reports 7 000 pounds sold to New England Pish Company. Alaska Coast Fisheries buys 15 000 pounds from Pete Oswald of the Tundra and Peter L Johnson sells 6 600 pounds to New England buyers. Cameron A Rich of the CAA visits from Anchorage staying at the Baranof. H Graves and wife depart for New York on a buying trip by PAA, with Mrs Graves possibly remaining east for a period.
In Stockholm on May 29 the Nazi Propaganda Minister Goebbels told the Volkischer Beobachter that the government will stop offering police protection to Allied airmen harassed by panicked civilians in Germany. He argued it would be too much to require German soldiers to shield murderers of children from angry parents. The paper noted Goebbels and others have ignored Nazi air raids on women and children and ground attacks on occupied nations.
Adolf Hitler conferred with Japan's ambassador Lt. Gen. Hiroshi Oshima on acute questions of German Japanese collaboration at Hitler's headquarters. Joachim von Ribbentrop attended the meeting as Allied observers speculate on Eisenhower awaiting fresh American troops before a new coast invasion.
The House Rules Committee approved a one year extension to the statute of limitations for court martial of Pearl Harbor commanders charged with dereliction of duty. Prosecution normally barred after June 7 this year. The extension, proposed by Rep. Dewey Short, directs court martial proceedings sometime during next year.

The Senate approved salary increases for postmasters from five to 20 percent, extending to those earning up to 8,000 dollars a year. The move comes despite protests led by Senator Clyde M. Reed of Kansas, reflected in a 40 to 12 Senate vote.

Massive daylight and night air raids hit Germany and occupied Europe. American heavy and light bombers struck factories in Poland and central and eastern Germany while other fleets bombed Vienna and the Neustadt area. British and American forces targeted fuel plants, tank and armored vehicle plants at Konigsborn, and bridges in northern France and Belgium as the Berlin radio reported continued air battles across the day.

The 55 year old bishop died in San Francisco after a lengthy illness. His diocese included Alaska and he served the church there and in other regions. The death leaves a vacancy in leadership of the diocese.
