May 22 reports say Fortresses bombed Kiel to hit submarine centers while Liberators pounded Pas de Calais fortifications. A peak raid saw 750 heavy bombers saturate Duisberg inland port with 2800 tons of explosives in a continuous 80 hour assault.
Ex War Secretary Patrick J. Hurley drafted a 30 page memo proposing US economic advisers to Iran Iraq Arabia and Syria to develop irrigation oil crops and finance. He argued this would spread the Four Freedoms and establish US influence while criticizing British lend lease in the Near East. He presented the plan to President Roosevelt during a Saturday lunch.
The Sacramento Solons split a doubleheader with Seattle to capture their first series in two seasons, four games to three. Rex Cecil earned his ninth win as San Diego beat Hollywood in one game. Oakland swept Los Angeles with a 10 inning win in the other.
Mel Ott entered the lineup on Sunday to aid the New York Giants in a split with St Louis, homering in one game and driving in a run with a double in another. The Reds won their first doubleheader of the season by taking both games from the Dodgers. Cubs exploded for 31 hits across two games to rout Boston. American bombers struck Paramushiro last Thursday night igniting fires at airfields and installations. Reports say two bombers attacked and possibly sank a Japanese patrol vessel, with a Navy search plane and an auxiliary vessel also targeted nearby.
Katherine Torkelson daughter of Mrs. Emil Samuelson wed Joseph W. Alexander in Restruction Lutheran Church with spring flowers and white tapers. Rev G H Hillerman officiated. May 22 report from MacArthur headquarters says Yankee infantry killed 111 Japanese and repelled counterattacks on the Dutch New Guinea mainland opposite Wadke Island. The American beachhead 110 miles northwest of Hollandia came under machine gun and mortar fire as engineers prepared an airstrip. Air actions included bombing of Mankowari, destruction of five Jap vessels, and Liberator strikes on Blake Island.
London reports the Invasion Headquarters issued direct orders to Europe’s underground army for D Day. The spokesman for Eisenhower indicated upcoming broadcasts from a new American station and urged listeners to learn the voice of a Supreme Commander's staff member.
Edward Hasbrouck aged 55 died at St. Ann’s Hospital at 3 30 p m Sunday after several weeks illness His remains are at the Charles W Carter Mortuary Funeral arrangements will be announced later He was born October 21 1888 in Buffalo Wyoming and survived by his wife living at Grays Harbor Washington He had recently moved from Petersburg to residence in Grays Harbor Washington
New York stock quotes show Alaska Juneau mine at 5 percent and Kennecott at 314, with United States Steel at 51 and Bethlehem Steel at 584. Dow Jones Industrials 139.43, rails 994.43, utilities gapped. Several of Juneau's young men depart for westward summer work including Chester Zenger and others.
A Tokyo radio communique broadcast via Japanese sources said enemy naval units attacked Marcus Island, 1200 miles southeast of Tokyo, with at least two raiding planes downed. The Allied strike also claimed damage to installations.
Ted Carter of the University of Alaska extension reports garden plots show improved soil prep and higher quality crops in Sitkan conditions. He plans visits this week to Capitol Street West Section 1 and nearby homes, inviting local garden owners to seek inspections and advice from Carter and Lydia Fohn-Hansen in Fairbanks.
Girl Scout Troop 4 led by Mrs. Robert Thorne and Mrs. G E Cleveland held an outdoor initiation ceremony and beach picnic on Douglas Island. Rita Barnhill Gale Page and Alita Kelly were invested. Troop 4 will become a seventh grade troop under the Rebekah Lodge as girls move to seventh grade, while sixth graders move to Troop 9. Kerry E Trent and Jonne Mapili from Stockton California arrived and checked into the Gastineau Hotel.
In Ketchikan Alaska on May 22 Vessel Owners and Deep Sea Fishermen voted at a joint meeting to fish immediately under protest against OPA ceiling prices. They adopted a resolution calling halibut packed in Alaskan ports for shipment to Washington Oregon or California hot cargo due to GPA rules causing price increases for dealers.
Vice President Henry A. Wallace departed Washington for China on a personal mission for President Roosevelt. He will carry messages and seek firsthand war area information, with stops in Siberia and Soviet cities including Novosibirsk and Tashkent, and plans to return by mid July with accompanying staff.
Mr and Mrs Norman Cook and their daughters are moving to Normandy Lodge their summer home. They will reside there until next September.

The Army defeated the City 14 to 4 in a Sunday exhibition at Piremen's Park. Wild pitching was not a feature as McClellan of the Army was struck in the head by a pitch. Fielding was fair and the Army showed promise with more practice. The City team, short of pitchers, must recruit arms before the league starts. George Red Shaw pitched well in nearly three hours of play.
A grudge game between AU 7 o'clock tonight pitting Companies 1 and 2 of the dunesu Volunteer Fire Department is planned at Firemen's Park. Both sides are hostile amid tense preparations with doctors nurses MPs ambulances on scene and Mayor Hayes and Chief Monngie involved in the incident.
