A sudden alarm in south east Europe arose as King Carol’s oil kingdom Rumania ordered 300000 reservists mobilized on 24 hours' notice. This marks near full mobilization, signaling a major escalation.
New York May 22 CBS reports a Paris morning broadcast urged women of France and Great Britain to join all services of the army where they can replace men. The appeal was picked up by CBS in New York.
Eight Montana Republican delegates were chosen to attend the National GOP gathering in Philadelphia in July. Although uninstructed, a majority favor Thomas Dewey and will vote as a unit, pledging Montana to Dewey at the convention.
President Roosevelt told reporters of brutal Nazi methods as warplanes swept refugee routes in France. He cited three to five million refugees fleeing toward Reims, mostly women and children, and urged U S cooperation in defense efforts. Mrs James York aboard the North Sea returned to Juneau from a vacation in the states.
In Washington on May 22 the Senate Naval Appropriations Subcommittee, with President Roosevelt's telephone approval, added 478000 dollars to the Navy Supply bill to fund a 25000 increase in enlisted personnel. Kaj Louring, a traveling man, arrived in Juneau aboard the North Sea and is staying at the Baranof. 7. T. R. Curtis also arrived in Juneau on the North Sea and is registered at the Gastineau Hotel.
Bulletin from London reports that within three hours today the House of Commons and Lords passed, and King George signed, an emergency war powers bill. It grants sweeping control over labor and wealth, including windfall tax measures raising excess profits to 100 percent. Parliament moved quickly to authorize dictatorial authority to curb profiteering and mobilize labor and capital for the empire.
KAUNAS May 22 A sensational report circulates that the Russian Government ordered an immediate halt to all shipments of Soviet oil to Germany. Oil in transit via Lithuanian railways is said to be recalled to Russia. If true, the stoppage could affect Germany’s war machine which relies heavily on fuel.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 12 to 1 to shelve a proposal to sell Army and Navy planes to the Allies. Only Senator Pepper of Illinois supported it. Chairman Key Pittman said the committee viewed the plan as violating international law and as US intervention in the European conflict.
Roosevelt outlines a twofold rearma ment policy. No new millionaires should be created and labor unions should not exploit the emergency for higher wages or special privileges. The aim is to prevent anyone from getting rich out of disaster while preserving social gains.

Washington May 22 The American Red Cross sped up a 10 million dollar relief drive after word that three to five million Belgian and French refugees are fleeing or stricken to Southern France. European delegate Wayne Taylor called the refugee problem impossible to exaggerate with an estimated 150000 killed or wounded.
In Washington on May 22, House Democrats blocked the GOP bid to decentralize the WPA by allowing direct grants to communities. They also defeated a proposal to boost the WPA fund by 2.232 billion dollars for the coming months in a 144 to 54 vote.
London May 22 The British Admiralty reports the British trawler Rusness sunk by German bombers. Three crew members were killed while the remaining sailors escaped.
Allied spokesmen report slight improvement after five dark days and heavy rain hampers German moves toward the English Channel. German commander admits possible temporary halt while British forces are described as pocketed in Belgium and French troops recapture AbbEVILLE and Arras amid renewed fighting. British women voice discontent in ongoing coverage.
On May 22 reporter Louis Lochner reports the Fort Bauer fortification near Liege capitulated after German artillery and dive bombers. Nazi swastikas were raised above the main fortification within twenty minutes of the attack.
