Anchorage report records a fire devastating the Alaska Railroad roundhouse and one locomotive. The blaze on Monday caused an estimated loss of 70 000 dollars. A separate note mentions land tax payments in the Dutch East Indies could be made in rice.
President Roosevelt plans to ask the states to ratify an amendment repealing national prohibition. He argues repeal plus federal liquor taxes would significantly increase U. S. revenue and bolster the treasury.

Vancouver police solved the death of Sam Shequin of Ketchikan Alaska found in Stanley Park last April. Jewelry found in a pawnshop tied to him and the pawnbroker said Shequin sold it himself, removing robbery as a motive. A coroner’s jury found the death was self-inflicted after he drew thousands from a Seattle bank months earlier.
Canberra May 17 A secession issue is dividing Australia with Western Australia leading a referendum drive that prompts farmers in South Australia to urge quitting the commonwealth. Tasmania shows a smaller movement while wealthier states New South Wales Victoria and Queensland oppose any breakaway.
Washington May 17 G ton B Means already serving a sentence faces a further two years imprisonment and a 10000 dollar fine after conviction with Norman Whitaker for defrauding Evalyn Walsh McLean of 35000 in a ransom hoax linked to the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. Means claimed to have knowledge of the case and suggested the baby was alive in Mexico. Government officials called the tale a mere figment of a bizarre imagination.
Washington May 17. A general improvement of business conditions throughout the country is reported to President Roosevelt by the Special Committee of the Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Board. This improvement is also noted in banking.
Ee nwin McClure, in the Houston invitation, opened with a one under par first round and stood six down to Gus Moreland, a Dallas youth who set a record 65. Moreland led the field as McClure posted his strong start.

Washington May 17 The Naval Board of Inquiry cited an error of judgment by Commander Frank McCord as a contributory cause for the loss of the airship Akron. Vilna Protests Sale of Valuable Tapestry Collection The town of Vilna Poland protests a sale of a tapestry collection owned by the basilica to fund repairs, with the archbishop proposing the sale and the Government approving.
Dr John Grier Hibben former Princeton University president emeritus died when his car collided with a truck at the Lincoln Highway intersection in Woodbridge New Jersey. His wife, riding with him, is critically injured and unconscious with a fractured skull. Authorities believe a stroke may have contributed to the crash.
Berlin May 17 Chancellor Adolf Hitler in a Reichstag address laid out Germanys foreign policy pledging to disarm to the extent other powers do and urging world cooperation with Roosevelt in solving the disarmament crisis His denials of invasion claims and insistence on treaty compliance aimed to reassure both international opinion and German nationalism.
In Harbin Manchuria on May 17 about 4000 Russian princesses baronesses and other high aristocrats seek husbands from the United States. They say American men are better husbands due to consideration affection loyalty and unselfishness rather than social status. American consul general George Hanson has worked on the matter.
