Eleven teenage inmates died when a blaze swept through the Philippine Training School for Girls in Manila. Police suspect arson as guards and matron faced questioning over attempted rescue. Eighty-one inmates escaped as two victims were found chained by legs in a ground floor detention cell.
In Vancouver on May 12 physicians ruled Sam Shequin of Ketchikan Alaska died from loss of blood after deep wrist gashes, following an apparent epileptic episode. The body was found in Stanley Park April 18 and exhumed at sister Mrs. James McArdie’s request for a new investigation into his finances and a missing friend, Samuel Kennedy.
The schooner Boxer will make its first north voyage since replacement by the North Star. It will load a full cargo of ties at Eagle Harbor for Seward replacements on the Alaska Railroad, with no trouble anticipated over non Alaska purchases.

He will travel by seaplane with pilot Meyring and is accompanied by R B Bender and Mgr Beg. The trip follows a busy legislative session with reorganizations and ongoing official duties.
Washington May 12 The Department of Justice will thoroughly investigate Andrew W Mellon former Secretary of Treasury and Ambassador to Great Britain over McFadden Pennsylvania's charges of tax evasion totaling about 6 700 000. Attorney General Cummings noted letters requesting inquiry and said the case hinges on a Mellon company sale alleged by McFadden.
Washington May 12 The Home has approved and sent to the President a bill to suspend the annual assessment work on mining claims in the United States and Territory of Alaska relieving seldom of mining claims from performing the customary $100 work for this fiscal year.
Japanese propaganda claimed to aim for control of Pieping and Tientsin without fighting. A bombing plane dropped handbills urging Chinese forces to cease resisting and warning of a tragedy if they do not yield. Chinese aviators trained by Americans were expected to defend the city when the attack extends.

In Walington on May 12 strong efforts are under way to dissolve German objections to Britain's arms reduction plan. President Roosevelt plans to press for acceptance in talks with high Japanese officials as part of a Geneva proposal backed by Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. Germany's objections have stalled progress, but officials expect similar responses from Japan.
In Washington on May 12, Gaston B Means testifies in his defense on conspiracy charges related to a 35000 dollar ransom. He states he saw the baby alive in Aiken South Carolina three weeks after the kidnapping and identifies alleged participants and a memorandum on the kidnapping plan.
Washington May 13 The President plans to present his industrial control legislation and the public works program to the Cabinet for approval before sending them to Congress next week.
