In Seattle on May 10 members of Machinists Local 79 Seacue and Local 239 Beltingham voted to accept a contract with Alaska Salman Industry Inc. The agreement includes a 11 percent wage increase, a guaranteed total of three months and 10 days work, foremen at 43.60 per day, cannery helpers at 11.29 per day, first machinists at 23.20 per day, plus $10,000 life insurance policies for air travel. Senators groom George for Democratic nomination
Senator Walter George of Georgia is being groomed by Southern Democrats to oppose President Truman for the Democratic presidential nomination. Senator Russell warned George’s name could be offered at the Philadelphia convention on a States’ Rights platform. The plan emerged at a 10-state meeting in Jackson Mississippi chaired by Governor Strom Thurmond who attacked Truman’s civil rights program. The sun's eclipse was visible in Du Neau last Saturday evening near 7 o'clock, lasting about 27 minutes. Less than half the sun was obscured as the moon traversed a thin annulus, with thinning clouds.
