Allied heavy and medium bombers struck Bucharest for the third time in 24 hours, guided by fires from yesterday’s daylight attack. The raid damaged rail yards, splintered locomotives and shops, with RAF Halifaxes and US Liberators delivering into a sustained four day air offensive against the Romanian capital.
Washington Merry Go Round notes Secretary Knox planned a Reserve officer training scheme to rival Annapolis supremacy. Admirals resisted, fearing loss of prestige and control as USNR grew to supply most officers. Knox proposed rapid training and integration of top reserves, but brass opposition doomed the plan. American airmen visited Japan's Kurile islands last Friday and unloaded explosives while flying through intense fire from heavy antiaircraft guns. The Navy reports also note operations on Ponape Island in the Central Pacific continuing with 65 tons unloaded at the position still held by Japanese forces in the Marshalls.
Paramushiro was raided in daylight last Saturday by Navy Ventura search planes. Antiaircraft fire encountered was light at Pearl Harbor Pacific Fleet headquarters on May 8.
May 8 report from New York notes the first eastern collegiate regatta ended with Columbia and Navy shells foundering in a triangular meet with Cornell. Both crews sank in the junior varsity race and the varsity race was shelved due to worsening conditions. Earl Bright sails for Seattle on Fish and Wildlife Service business. Selma Lindquist and Gertrude Lyle Hebert returned Saturday night after visiting southeast Alaska cities. Ronald E. White of Sexton Chabot Molitor came from Seattle to stay at the Gastineau. Advanced Allied HQ in New Guinea reports carrier aircraft and Liberators attacking operations across the Dutch East Indies theater. Navy Catalinas damaged a 5,000 ton Japanese freighter while intercepting an eight-ship convoy off Celebes. Liberators hit Schouten Islands as one attacker was shot down. Heavy bombers struck Timor and southeast Celebes, Koepang and Penfiti. Two enemy aircraft were destroyed at Wewak. Barges sunk off Bougainville and attacks on a supply bivouac near Rabaul area delivered heavy bomb damage.
London reports Moscow says the storming of Sevastopol defenses has begun with two days of bitter fighting and broken enemy resistance, following broadcasts noting the assault started on Sunday.
Allied and Japanese forces clash across Manipur Hill front with Japanese offensive gains and heavy losses. Allied patrols push toward the Kohima road, advancing about 28 miles north of Imphal while the Buthedaung port area on the Malay Peninsula is reoccupied after a prior withdrawal.

An AP dispatch from aboard a carrier reports a two day air and sea assault on Truk reducing its offensive efficiency. Planes, gun positions and defenses were severely damaged while rescue efforts saved downed airmen offshore and in the lagoon. Losses were light and at least one carrier completed the mission with no casualties.
The Associated Press reports that with six states selecting delegates Roosevelt could clinch the fourth term nomination as 415 of 510 delegates have pledged. Wyoming and Ohio among others are set to name dozens of Roosevelt supporters with Washington also contributing. Bricker expected to receive Ohio's 52 GOP votes at the Republican convention.
Misgivings about the military situation in northwestern Henan Province grow as field dispatches say Jap troops moved three and a half miles closer to Loyang and are now six miles south of the ancient city. Pierce fighting reported across the Henan front. Robert Davis arrives in town and registers at the Juneau Hotel.
May 8 Washington Republicans oppose a $50 billion increase in the public debt limit. The administration agrees to cut back the request to 240 billion dollars, with Treasury official Daniel Bell saying the lower cap is acceptable if the higher ceiling is sought early next year. Rep. Herold Knutson complains of waste and notes the debt remains about 19 billion under the current 210 billion limit.
President Roosevelt returns to Washington after a month at a South Carolina coast plantation. He is described as tanned rested and in excellent shape by his physician. He told reporters he feels a great deal better and will meet Congressional leaders for early talks.
Word reached here of the accidental drowning of Peter Iverson at Hawk Inlet yesterday afternoon at 2. He was a cannery employee on a fishing trip when the accident occurred. The body was recovered at 7 30 this morning and is being brought here. A brother, Didrick Iverson of Alexander South Dakota, has been notified and arrangements await his word.
Donald Foster, General Superintendent of the Office of Indian Affairs, L. D. Arnold, and Frank Lenzie arrived from the states to confer on the reindeer program. Arnold is in the Forestry Division from Chicago, and Senate is Regional Forester with Indian Affairs at Spokane. Mrs. Dewey Baker and her son have left for the South on vacation.
A wage contract dispute between Alaska Salmon Industry Inc and the Alaska Fishermen's Union will be heard by the National War Labor Board in Washington, D C, next Wednesday. Union secretary Andrew Vigen says fishermen may skip the salmon season without new contracts. Also, halibut fleet operations were discussed during talks in Washington with Seattle Vessel Owners Association officials.
Washington May 8 1944 analysts note a record population shift in the United States as war service alters voting strength across states counties and districts Census Bureau estimates show Delaware and Rhode Island gaining population despite large armed forces totals while California and New York face different net changes. Legal voting restrictions may further complex turnout with observers predicting a highly unsettled postwar vote and possible lower totals than prior elections.

Ernest Ehler to depart for the south for about two months.
In observance of Madanal Hosp iceta the fan Indian Service Hospital will hold open house from 3 o clock to 8 20 o'clock in the afternoon. The hospital is operated by the Office of Indian Affairs for the Indians of southeast Alaska.
