A tornado struck Central and South Texas causing at least 66 deaths and extensive damage estimated over 500000. The disaster affected Range and Frost areas with many housed casualties, while National Guardsmen and volunteers dig through debris as nearly every Frost building is leveled.
Fire fronts across the parched East threaten homes as authorities and Red Cross mobilize to provide food and shelter. Five thousand people are estimated homeless in New Jersey after a three day fire battle.
Casualties from Monday's quake place four hundred dead in Pegu with two hundred killed by a later tsunami. The report also notes fatalities among civilians and clashes with rebels elsewhere.
May 7 report notes 37 Nebraska mothers and widows sail to France as the first Gold Star group invited by the government to visit battlefields cemeteries and former camps. In Columbus on May 7 Mrs. Ethel Geller aged 44 shot seven of her eleven children after putting them to bed and then attempted suicide. She is hospitalized in a dying condition. Her ex husband Darby Yelden, 46, was previously sentenced in 1926 to the Ohio Penitentiary on a statutory charge. The dead are Alice and Alden twins aged 3 Byron 6 Eleanora 7 Elaine 8 Barren 15 and Wayne 9. Worry over providing for her children is believed to be the motive.
United States Senator David Reed of Pennsylvania arrived in New York on the Olympic with Mrs. Reed after leaving the London Naval Conference. He hastened to Washington to attend a Senate hearing on the treaty scheduled to begin today. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee plans public hearings on the moral treaty starting Monday.
Agent Larry Parks announced the seaplane Taku will fly to the Taku River next Sunday morning weather permitting. It will be the first trip to the mining district this season.
The Senate voted 41 to 39 against Judge John J. Parker for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. It is the first rejection of a Supreme Court nomination since 1894, leaving Sanford's seat open as Parker comments to supporters.
Private advices from Juneau report Nenana ice may break up around May 8 or later. The river was opened above and below, weather freezing at night, and the river has risen or fallen by inches as conditions warm. Officials wait for a two foot rise before movement, with Nenana city noting warm sunny conditions today.
In Chicago on May 7 a mutilated body was found face down in a ditch along the Spollet Road, believed to be 18 year old Jack Heinman Capone henchman. Police say he was tortured before being slain with a machine gun raking his head.
In Oregon on May 7 two small Chow dogs totaling 105 pounds fought a large cougar that attacked their mistress in a pasture near her farm home. Mrs Nate Sable escaped as the dogs charged. Her husband frightened off the animal after a chow was slashed.
Springfield May 7 The Democratic Central Committee declares Mrs Ruth McCormick has forfeited her legal nomination after spending over one million in the Senate primary and urges voters to back James Hamilton Lewis Democrat as the legitimate United States Senate candidate from Illinois.
Packsonville Florida May 7 Dr Lincoln McConnell former Policeman turned author lecturer and minister died of a heart attack. Malcolm Rigby observer of the US Weather Bureau visiting Territory HQ in Fairbanks last night will be assistant to Howard J Thompson in charge of the Fairbanks station. He is from Everett Washington and was attached to the Seattle station.
San Francisco reports a 45 000 mile yacht dash to Tahiti set for June with six entrants. The piece notes a 1925 race won by L A Norris aboard Mariner in 21 days 114% hours. Delegates from Britain Germany France and Italy will present lectures on air navigation and international aviation law while American officials and industry leaders participate in the program.

A heavy snow storm is believed to have forced them back to Teller. Pilot Graham remains delayed due to weather from flying to Fairbanks with $60,000 in shipments and several thousands in orders from Seattle firms to connect with the next steamer to Nome.
