Los Angeles May 7 V Peter a crewman on the battleship New York died today after a steam evaporator explosion Saturday afternoon. Six others remain in critical condition.
In Los Angeles on May 7 Joseph Becker of East Lake City shot and killed Juno Kelso after she broke their engagement. Becker surrendered after the shooting and confessed at police headquarters.
Six Italian immigrants seeking entry into the United States were killed and a seventh member wounded when several Mexicans hired to help them flee across the border fired on the group near Laredo. Advices from Ostia, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, report the incident.
Miss Jane Addams, founder of Hull House, concludes after a six week British India tour that racial feeling remains strong and harmonizing antagonistic elements is not adequately faced. Vladivostok May 7 American consul to close the consulate on May 10 and depart with staff for the United States leaving no American representative here in any capacity. Citizens were offered the option to depart or stay. the majority chose to remain.
In Vancouver Washington on May 7 George BE Whitfield was found guilty of first degree murder for killing Anna Nosio, 11, on March 8 as she walked home from school near Battleground. The jury deliberated seven hours and recommended the death penalty.
Reports from Kotzebue advise Capt Roald Amundsen may depart earlier than June 20 after arriving April 26 at Wainwright. He stayed several days at Kotzebue suffering snow blindness and was delayed at Candle due to heavy snow.
The county grand jury in Fort Worth Texas returned a report charging Congressman Thomas Blanton with criminal libel for a Morning News article last July. The piece alleged Oscar Calloway urged friends not to buy Liberty Bonds but to conserve and obstruct the draft. Calloway, a former member of Congress, is named in the case.

Albany May 7. The New York Legislature adjourned with repeal of the strict enforcement act and a measure targeting the Ku Klux Klan expected to win Governor Smith's approval. The Volstead aid repeal leaves New York alone in the nation without state enforcement provisions. A separate bill would criminalize warrantless searches by peace officers.
Island report claims Clara Phillips the hammer murderess is said to have escaped from a Los Angeles jail amid unconfirmed rumors. The report originates from Taocugicipla and lacks confirmation.
