May 6 reports brush and grass fires sweep many Eastern States burning thousands of acres and causing millions in property loss. Firefighters battle stubborn blazes as dry conditions and below normal rainfall fuel fires, with Southern New Jersey seeing the greatest menace.
Rangoon May 6 Burma Telegraph Agency reports the town of Pegu wiped out by a large earthquake and tidal wave. Death toll estimated at 1000. Public buildings and homes destroyed leaving almost the entire population homeless.
Late yesterday six precincts in the First Division reported, lifting the Republican primary total to about 3,650 votes but not altering major territorial or divisional outcomes. Seven precincts remain, including Metlakatla and Angoon, not expected to change results significantly.
R E Bobby Sheldon, former two term House member, files as an independent candidate for the House from the Fourth Division per the Fairbanks News Miner. Senator John W Dunn, veteran Fourth District legislator, also seeks re election as an independent in November.
Washington May 6 Three United States Senators reported break ins over the weekend with articles stolen from Senator McKellar and Senator Smoot. A Tennessee man claimed his visit to the Senate floor saw his office rifled though he said he lost only a few pens. Senator Brock of Tennessee said a desk pad and a couple of pens were taken. The Secret Service chief denied involvement.
In Los Angeles on May 6 Rev Robert Shuler was sentenced to 20 days in jail and fined $100 for contempt of court. The Trinity Methodist Episcopal pastor was booked and began serving time shortly after citation for criticizing two Superior Court judges on a radio program regarding the Yaroug Julian Petrolean prosecutions.
Mrs. Maybelle Cadman Schooley sister of famed composer Charles Wakefield Cadman and a noted musician and scenario writer has been granted a divorce from Edward Allen Schooley in Reno. The couple wed in 1909.
London reports that J Pierpont Morgan of New York helps the Archbishop of Canterbury cover costly Lambeth Palace upkeep and gardens. The archbishop, paid $75,000 yearly, relies on Morgan and even joined a Mediterranean cruise aboard the Corsair while recuperating.
Dublin May 6 The governor general of the Irish Free State issued regulations aligning with the Paris international convention. No aircraft can be registered unless owned by a state resident or company. airworthiness certificates required. pilots must hold certificates. Flights over Shannon’s Clonlara at or above 6,000 feet forbidden. negative ban on dangerous tricks. The Free State lags in aviation with few machines outside army use.
The Treasury Department has ordered seven customs officers to travel to Europe aboard large liners sailing this month. They will collect information to simplify declarations made by passengers on return from abroad.
In Ahualuluco a posse seized a man believed to be a wanted bandit and hanged him in the public square at Talla. The following day locals found the hanged man was Canuto Gaycla, a respected citizen who closely resembled the bandit of the same name.
Invading tornadic winds swept Oklahoma Kansas and Nebraska causing extensive damage with no lives in Western Oklahoma but fatalities in Blaine County Oklahoma a 16 year old boy and Mrs C Bush among the injured about 30 hurt across the region.
In Delhi India May 6 two persons were killed as rioting erupted in the heart of the city. Indian infantry in eight armed cars imposed an armed defense with troops guarding entrances to civil buildings. A virtual state of war prevailed on the principal street and assembly was limited to five persons.

The Fairbanks area opens its gold dredging season unusually early as Fairbanks Exploration Co. dredge on upper Cleary Creek begins operation. The event includes weddings and social notices among dredge crews and families, with Bayers and Lesher relatives attending ceremonies on boating ventures tied to Princeton and Gilmore dredge operations.

U S Marshal Albert White plans departure from Seattle next Saturday for Juneau per recent word. The move places White on assignment duties in Alaska beginning shortly after the stated travel date.

Wrangell Alaska May 6 William G Thomas United States Commissioner here died at noon yesterday A native of Oregon Judge Thomas 48 came here more than 50 years ago He served the Federal Government in various capacities for half a century and was one of Alaskan pioneers He is survived by a wife and a large number of relatives in Oregon Washington and Idaho
