NBC and CBS monitoring report pro-German Rashid Ali Al Gallani regime in Iraq opened artillery on British forces at Habbaniyah Airport, 60 miles west of Baghdad, as fighting erupts in oil fields. British forces return fire. evacuations of women and children noted.

BERNE May 2 Former King Carol of Romania has sailed from Lisbon aboard the American ship Excambion with Magda Lupescu and Ernest Urdareanu. Reports say the former king and party are likely headed to Cuba.
Berlin reports from May 2 state semi Nazi sources oppose displaying the American flag in the European War Zone. The Dienst aus Deutschland, aligned with Wilhelmstrasse, argues the Reich pursues only legitimate commercial aims in the Western Hemisphere and finds no grounds for conflict between the two peoples.
London May 2 Lord Beaverbrook minister of Aircraft Production is named Minister of State a move seen as placing him near deputy prime minister and likely control over war materiel. Churchill merges Shipping and Transportation and creates Wartime Communications under Frederick Leathers. J T C Moore takes over aircraft production. Ronald Cross named High Commissioner in Australia.
Two Navy fliers were indicted on manslaughter charges in the death of Mrs. Robert Phillips near Robertsdale Alabama. Officials said the March 25 beheading occurred when a plane swept low over a turnip field. Indicted are Joseph Thompson 23 Healdbourg California and Paul Brown 22 Chicago.
British sources in Cairo say losses in Greece will be offset by large arrivals of new war matériel, much of it American made, now pouring into Africa.
The British admiralty says a squadron blew up and sunk three Axis destroyers and five cargo ships bound for Africa between Sicily and Tripoli. One Italian destroyer Luca Tarigo is identified, and sister ship A Usodimare is noted. The Mo Hawk was reportedly sunk.

President Roosevelt called on the defense industry to operate machine tools continuously for 24 hours a day seven days a week, with only overhaul and repair pauses. He urged speeding up supply of new tools to meet the rising demand for munitions, planes, and ships amid a critical national situation.

London May 2 Prime Minister Robert Mensies of Australis appealed to the United States for help on a great scale. He said Australia cannot pursue the war amateurishly and hopes for material support from a strong nation to shorten the conflict.
