The William Lysell contempt case and the John Fahey matter were settled out of court. Lysell was discharged from the federal jail after being cited for refusing to remove a piling from a title flat claimed by Casey and Shattuck. He had been committed to federal custody on February 28 until the piling was removed. Fahey recently acquired the piling and capping, and was cited to appear in court this morning to answer contempt proceedings.

He deems Justice Hughes eliminated. Conferences point to a compromise pick among Root Burton and Ohioan for the moment.
In Washington, leaders acknowledge strong support for Henry Ford as a peace at any price candidate in Michigan and Nebraska primaries. Opposition to Col. Roosevelt grows over his war preparedness stance, signaling Roosevelt’s program may lose favor with voters.
Rear Admiral Fiske warned the Senate in 1914 that the United States Navy lacked sufficient officers and men and needed a general staff and improved training. Naviga tion opened late today at the Straits of Mackinaw according to a dispatch to the lighthouse bureau. The report says large masses of broken ice are rapidly clearing the channel near Milwaukee May 2.
John C. Allen was appointed Commissioner at Petersburg this afternoon to succeed the resigned Mr. McWilliams. Allen is the former deputy marshal at Petersburg and at present city clerk and magistrate. He has been in Petersburg about three years, previously connected with fishing and other work at Ket chik an before that time.

Beside the bier of her mother Miss Katherine Titus of Marion married today William E Banniert of Rowan Montana by Rev. Mr Jesse Swank. The mother requested the ceremony be performed before her burial. She was born today at Brush Ridge, Marion County.
London May 1 German troops are reported to have suffered heavy losses near Hulluch when asphyxiating gas fired at British forces blew back on their lines due to a sudden wind shift. The report comes from the war office via General Haig.

The War Office announced a call to the colors effective May 15 for the classes 188 to 1884 in the second and third categories. No exemptions will be granted. The call will draft men, including those aged up to 40 years, into service.
OTTAWA reports James Good win of Sacramento listed in casualty notes among Canadian overseas forces. Ronald H. Hilton of Seattle appears among the wounded. Hilton, 23, eldest son of Rev Canon Hilton, rector of St Luke's in Seattle, served 18 months in the 29th battalion of Vancouver before enlisting at the University of Columbia.

Berlin May 1 The relief associations formed in Germany for East Prussian towns destroyed in the war have joined into a single league to coordinate aid. Emperor Wilhelm sent congratulations and a gift of 100000 marks to the league for relief efforts.
Butte Montana May 1 The Postal Telegraph fined $1,000 in the criminal court today for transmitting information on which racing bets were made. Judge Donlan said the fine too small for second offense but he could not make it larger. An appeal was taken.
An American hospital train presented to the French army reached Paris on its first trip from the front. It brought a number of wounded soldiers injured in the fighting at Verdun.
