General Douglas Haig reports to the War Office that British forces have captured forty villages along the St Quentin front amid stormy weather on the western front. Germans retreating toward new positions resist in places between Arras and Baupaume, while civilians desert, taking the last loaves before departure.
Paris reports 853 square miles liberated from German forces up to March 21 in Pas de Calais Oise Aisne and Somme departments. The liberation includes 366 towns and villages housing 121935 French residents. Germans still hold 7128 square miles of France.
London dispatch reports stormy cold weather and snow squalls as British armies in France pursue retreating Germans. Paris dispatch says French forces report that most villages along their line near St Quentin are presently in flames as of March 22.
Paris March 22 report says French forces won a severe battle with heavy losses and captured Savrienois castle and the village of Jussy about nine miles south of St. Quentin. Skirmishes with German detachments occurred on the St. Quentin road south of Chauncy. French reoccupy the Aulette line and consolidate new positions.
Brief war dispatches from Amsterdam forecast the possibility of a German withdrawal in the region north of Arras and extending into Belgian territory. The reports come from London dated March 22, noting heightened speculation on shifts in front lines.
March 1 dispatch reports retreating German forces looted seven supply depots of the American Relief Commission and deprived French civilians of all food. Captain E L Smith aboard the Alaskan reports two German U boats were detected beneath the French coast by aircraft patrol observers. Trawlers encircled the subs with nets, trapping and surfacing them with crews captured. The two U boats lay side by side at Lapallice harbor before the Alaskan departed.
A pronounced low pressure system was central this morning over the Prince William Sound district with a barometer of 28.92 inches at Valdez landing. The disturbance brings unsettled weather to the eastern half of the Territory with snow or rain in southeastern districts. Meteorologist M. B. Summers notes the conditions.
Petrograd dispatches report political prisoners held by Hertchinek prison in Siberia are released by new government officials. Many arrive at Chita with a reception by military bands. In Seattle on March 22 eight year old Nellie Inshin was run over and killed by an auto driven by Deputy Sheriff Don Buckley. Her mother Mrs Inshin had died two weeks earlier. the child whispered she was going to find her mother before the accident.
President Wilson re appointed Major General Schott as Chief of Staff of the army citing his close ties to the Secretary of War. Schott will serve until September under normal rules but may stay active during war regardless of age limits. Special from New York.
Fairbanks March 22 The Daily Citizen prints a telegram from Juneau dated March 20 1917 in which Dan Sutherland accuses Judge Jennings of pressuring a board to file an answer to block a certificate and predicts the contest will go to the House of Representatives The telegram is labeled raw machine politics and others call the publication near contempt of court by lawyers in Fairbanks Alaska
