British moves to fully close Northern Ireland's border with Eire are expected to implement suspension of travel between the islands. Belfast reports note the step as imminent amid Allies curbing Axis spy activity from neutral bases. Other undisclosed measures may follow as urgency rises.
The Washington Merry Go Round reports eight paratroopers drowned at Camp Mackall on February 19 during training and flight jumps. The piece argues that three-point parachute releases trap airmen with tangled gear, especially when one hand is injured. It notes British single-point releases reduce drowning risk, and questions patents and profits delaying U S adoption.

Washington March 13 President Roosevelt nominated Maj Gen James Doolittle commander of the Eighth Air Force in England for promotion to Lieutenant General He held temporary rank of Lieutenant Colonel during the Tokyo raid April 18 1942 and after that attack was advanced to Brigadier General and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor
Bad weather at the Anzio beachhead and Allied Naples headquarters limited operations. Artillery fire increased on three land fronts while patrols clashed with small enemy groups at several points, but no large-scale action occurred.
A. H. Ziegler of Ketchikan, Democratic candidate for Delegate to Congress, arrived in Juneau with Mrs. Ziegler for a four week campaign swing. A veteran of the First Division, he has served three legislature sessions and carried the First Division in a previous race. He urged an unbiased, fact‑gathering study on Alaska statehood and fiscal implications, proposing the Territorial government fund a competent, independent report.
London dispatch reports the Red Army has captured Kherson on the lower Dnieper and advanced to within 22 miles of the Nazi base. Moscow says troops moved along the Inguls River toward Nikolaev, while 60 thousand German casualties are claimed in eight days.
Allied forces report U S Marines have seized Wotho Atoll in the Marshall Islands set on the western edge of the group. American bombers hit four enemy bases in the eastern Marshalls while all planes returned safely, with 32 atolls still under Japanese control and others believed fortified.
Washington dispatch reports a clash between Republicans and southern Democrats over the soldier vote. Rep Rankin leads opposition while others fear a flawed federal ballot may imperil future campaigns. Army and Navy officials say state ballots are impractical in wartime.
Senator Tom Connally urged acceptance of the compromise service vote bill from House and Senate conferees. He warned rejection would end hope for other voting legislation, saying the conference report enables more soldiers and sailors to vote than any other measure. Debate expected to last two days.

Allied headquarters in Naples reports British fighter sweeps against German shipping in the western Mediterranean hit two supply ships off the Spanish coast. One was driven ashore and the other sank slowly. A Berlin broadcast claims the attack violated international law. The British Blenheims also sank the 3,700 ton German refrigerator ship Kirissi in Spanish waters near the Erba river mouth, with 10 crew killed and 15 wounded. The Adriatic saw two more German vessels sunk near Nerštva Channel and below Ancona, with several Germans captured as the first ship went down.
New Delhi reports Allied successes in Burma’s Arakan sector. Buthedaung 55 miles north of Akyab is occupied, Japs driven from hills between Htindaw and Buthedaung and from Cazabil north. Chinese and American forces push south along the main road toward Huw Viney, advancing two miles in 24 hours and reaching five miles south of Chanma, with about 2,000 Japs trapped at a road block near Walawbum.
