The Treasury presented a biennial budget for Alaska with expenditures totaling over 2.9 million for 1929-1930 and revenues estimated at about 2.054 million, leaving a projected deficit of 493,081.64. A March 1 cash balance stood at 918,087, signaling a potential drop to 425,200.93 if appropriations meet the estimates.
Thomas Taggart, 72, a veteran Indiana Democratic leader, died at his Indianapolis home after months of illness. The longtime political figure was famed for loyalty to friends and keen memory for faces and names, including his arc from a railroad lunch counter to national influence.

In Peoria Illinois three more men are charged with murder for distributing poisoned alcohol that caused seventeen weekend deaths and added to other deaths in Galesburg. Louis Fells owner of Stockyards Hotel Walter Neibert and Maurice Quirk are named in warrants along with O Guffin and his wife. Maurice Mansfield and his wife are held without bail.
Steamer Alameda bound for Seattle via Juneau carries a large fur cargo but reports from Kuskokwim and Bristol Bay show the lightest catch in years. Many trappers could not catch a single fox, with about 1,000 foxes harvested on Unimak Island.
Two vessels arrived with 12,000 pounds of halibut in Seattle selling for 12 to 17 cents per pound. Prince Rupert quotes prices at 11.5 and 6 cents. A total of 98,000 pounds were sold with 50,000 pounds bound for Seattle.
Gerald Smith announced at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon that the first commercial planes to Alaska this year will reach Juneau next week. The forerunner aircraft will map the route for a Seattle to Alaska service by International Air Lines, departing Seattle Monday for the North. The flight will survey conditions and study hazards, including air mail safety considerations cited by Assistant Postmaster General craft Glover.
Mystery surrounds a shooting at the Miami Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. A man was killed, another wounded, and a 17-year-old daughter was arrested after an altercation that began with a card game on the fourteenth floor. Police say Alice Smith asserted she would not answer questions.
A Madeira dispatch reports more than 100 people killed and many injured when a huge landslide swept nine crowded houses in the Valley of St. Vincent, sending the homes into the river and toward the sea after torrential rains.
In St Louis on March 7 Mrs Lena Hawkins 42 shot and killed one daughter and wounded another while they slept. She then attempted suicide but all bullets discharged. Neighbors found her in night attire lamenting her failure. Police could not obtain a coherent account. An earlier incident in November involved Mr Hawkins shooting his horse.
Noel Wein sails in a 4 Hamilton Plane from Nome this morning bound for North Cape Siberia with supplies and expected to return late today with furs, per a Nome cablegram to the customs office in Juneau.
New York shares swung with short call money at 8 to 12 percent as bulls ran for cover. High price specialties fell beyond $10 and $45, while many active industrials, railroads, and utilities dropped $3 to $7. The Associated Press index shows industrials down about 7 points, rails about 1 1/2, and utilities around 9 points over four days.
Washington May 7 The Beenolleth Congress appropriated 0,291,599,000 for the last two years to fund government operations. Although modest beside the World War peak of 27,000,000,000 in 1918 19, the current total surpasses the Sixty Nin th Congress by about half a million dollars.
Babe Herman has come to terms with the Brooklyn Robins for a new contract after negotiating through months of trade rumors and offers. The deal secures the veteran outfielder for the team the season.
Moses Edwin Clapp former United States Senator from Minnesota dies in Washington at age 106 after a long legal career. Born May 21, 1831 in Delphi Indiana he practiced law in Wisconsin Minnesota and later moved to St. Paul. He served as Minnesota Attorney General and as a U S Senator from 1901 to 1917. He opened law offices in Washington in 1917.
Washington reports that the Republican National Committee intends to solidify gains in the former Solid South after the session. Chairman Hubert Work said the party will use every influence to make results permanent and build a virile party organization in the South. The move follows pressure from Southern states to align permanently with the Republicans.
Joe Dundee of Baltimore, the world welterweight champion, was ordered by the National Boxing Association to defend his title by March 21 or surrender it.

In El Paso Texas 200 Federal troops move on Juarez to confront about 400 rebels advancing toward the city with expected contact within hours.
Severe west winds and heavy snow struck the Midwest causing injuries and extensive damage. In Tomahawk Wisconsin a fire swept the business district damaging about 500000 dollars. In Chicago six people were injured and three feared lost at sea on Lake Michigan amid gale forces. Winds toppled trees and signs in Milwaukee and Chicago as cold waves battered the region.
