The Dutch submarine O-11 sank after a surface collision with a vessel near Amsterdam. Ten crew leapt overboard and swam to a tug, with part of the submarine surfacing later. Two naval officers boarded a rescue boat to aid trapped crew. three men were wounded and two others missing feared trapped in flooded compartments.
London officials urged registering about half a million children to prepare their withdrawal to the countryside if spring air raids occur. The appeal was made March 6 as part of ongoing civil defense measures.
Great Britain and France pressed talks in Washington with Cordell Hull to resolve U S handling of Allied blockade of Germany. Discussions centered on control stations for American ships censorship of mail delays in examining ships at Gibraltar and blocking German exports through U S ports.
An 18 hour search for four year old Nona Carpenter in Tahlequah Oklahoma ended when a National Guardsman found her asleep beside her two pet dogs. Doctors said she was hungry but otherwise fine. She was taken to her parents five miles away. The Guardsman recounted she slept curled between the dogs for warmth.
Congressman Ambrose Kennedy of Maryland urged fortifying Alaska to defend the Pacific coast. He cited Alaska’s lack of defenses and warned that Japan and Russia could threaten the United States within 750 miles if no fortifications are built. He spoke during a summer Alaska visit about the need for preventive measures.
Preston Grover Washington reports on a Smith-of-Virginia investigation into blackjacking by the government aimed at compelling compliance with labor laws. He notes Congress has used similar tactics to raise wages and shorten hours, including Bacon-Davis and Walsh-Healy acts, as well as grants in aid to states for education and reform programs.
In Bucharest on March 6 a high authority said Britain seeks full equality with Germany in sharing Rumanian exports including oil. Minister Tilea, returning from London, will press Rumania toward an inevitable choice between Germany and the Allies as it cannot ship 1,600,000 tons of oil to both this year.
Gen Sikorski lists in exile government briefings atrocities by Germans including 136 Polish schoolboys killed, 6000 Poles executed or massacred since December, and 350 hostages deported from Gdynia forced to dig graves. Berlin calls the charges a poor distraction from alleged Polish provocations.

Labor MP Noel Baker introduced the first wartime censure motion against the Chamberlain government. He argued that land sale restrictions on Jews in parts of Palestine violated League rules guiding the territory. Colonial Secretary MacDonald defended the restrictions.
San Francisco March report says work on the Fairbanks Alaska airbase will start earnestly next month with several hundred men to be employed at the outset. Major Edward M. George notes Alaska labor will be used where possible and confirms transfer of carpenters, bulldozer operators, concrete men and other skilled laborers to the project.
Reports from Budapest on March 6 said a Nazi official Rhinhold Marietz and his wife were killed in Zeran, a town in the German-occupied Polish district. Arrests were reported as Poland faces reorganization efforts by German authorities.
In the House of Commons on March 6, a British spokesman denied Britain blundered in stopping an American clipper ship for mail. The official asserted the action was justified by what was found aboard the vessel.
A tri motor Mexican Aviation Company plane with seven passengers and five crew aboard disappeared on a Mexico City to Minatitlan run. A searching plane located the craft in jungle country, crews planned land party efforts and authorities awaited further word on casualties.
Maxine Elliott, renowned American stage star and former Broadway darling, died in Juan Les Pins, France, after a heart ailment. Born February 5, 1873 in Rockland Maine, she rose from Cordelia to global fame, later hosting European society and quitting Broadway at her career’s peak to become a noted International hostess on the Riviera. Her sister also pursued acting.
Soviet forces pressed ice crossings toward Viipuri Bay but were repulsed by Finnish defenses. Moscow claimed a foothold on the western shore yet Finnish reports denied it. The battle stretched along the Karelian Isthmus with heavy tank and aircraft activity and civilian casualties reported.
Federal Grand Jury charged Remington Arms Company with violating the Neutrality Act for shipping 27,500 rounds of ammunition to Mexico. Also indicted are two Mexicans and a retired Army Major linked to the National Revolutionary Party. James Chasmar of Remington downplayed the Houston indictment, saying the firm has cooperated with the State Department.
