German warplanes attacked British east coast shipping as authorities reported several large ships sunk and convoys dispersed. A Norwegian vessel was badly damaged but reached an east coast port after distress signals. British claims said no ships were actually hit.
Mrs Betsey Cushing Roosevelt testified that James Roosevelt asked for a divorce in 1938 and deserted her after she refused. She followed him to California in November and he again pressed for divorce and her leaving the state. Settlement grants custody of two children and monthly support of 167 dollars per child, rising to 250 when they turn 12. Case set to resume next Monday for testimony of her brother.
Paris reports a franc revaluation and gold stock borrows by the Bank of France totaling about 1.25 billion dollars to bolster the wartime treasury. Decrees aim to ration food, curb spending, and push farm production with 7 million farmers urged to stay put and plant heavily this spring. Washington says U.S. impact likely minimal per Treasury and State officials.
Paris on March 1 reports a government decree imposing three days a week of prohibition on alcoholic beverages across France. The measure targets nationwide restriction to curb consumption.
The Italian motorship Fella sailed with 35 crew members from the scuttled German liner Columbus. The remaining crew stayed at Angel Island immigration station. The 52 plus age sailors claim they are too old for military service and declined to reveal their destination.

Sumner Welles American Under Secretary of State and Roosevelt envoy arrived in Berlin and met with Foreign Minister von Ribbentrop. German sources say Germany will not discuss peace unless Britain's economic stranglehold is opened to Welles.
Forty one miners from the CIO Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers Union ended a 60-hour sitdown 3,000 feet underground in the Pioneer gold mine. Police Inspector John Shirras negotiated their return after a three hour conference with the men and their families.
London reports that a Royal Air Force fleet probed Berlin last night in the third such mission this week and also reconnoitered other German cities. A War Ministry note says plans near completion to halt German shipments to Italy with details pending.
