Washington reports the Treasury closes its books on the costliest fiscal year in U S history. Temporary records show about 26 billion dollars spent on direct war purposes plus more for other activities, totaling roughly 32 1/2 billion. The new budget will exceed the old by more than double once the figures are finalized.
In Detroit on June 30 Nazi air force Lieutenant Peter Krug testified he escaped a prison camp in April to return to duty. He named Max Stephan, a German born Detroit restaurant proprietor, as the man who aided him upon his arrival, charging Stephan with treason for assisting Krug after his escape.
The Washington Merry-Go-Round charges slow action by officials on securing rubber from Brazil. Six months after Pearl Harbor, only 500 tons entered Brasil in April and 10,000 tons are projected for 1942, far short of the 800,000 tons needed by armed forces and civilians. An interim arrangement between Jesse Jones, the State Department, and BEW is noted as still insufficient.
Ruth Mitchell sister of Brig Gen Billy Mitchell recounts escape from Nazi Europe and praises air bombing to defeat Germany after joining Chetnik Guerrilla Army. She notes five German divisions engaged in Yugoslavia and that Drottningholm passengers disembarked. Churchill announces Auchinleck in command of British Eighth Army in North Africa. Fresh air raids and U S bomber support target Axis tanks and bases near Matruh and Fuka with advancing combat reports.
German radio reports seventeen Allied ships sunk in the past 24 hours. The tally includes a British warship in the Bay of Bengal and a Soviet motor torpedo boat in the Gulf of Finland, with the remaining fifteen lost in the western Atlantic Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.
Roy Norton, 75, author and adventurer who joined Rex Beach on the Alaska gold rush and wrote The Plunderers in 1911, died today in New York. Norton was a noted friend of Rex Beach and chronicled his Alaska experiences in the early 20th century.
Postmaster Albert Wile announced that enemy alien registration forms were received by air mail this afternoon and aliens may register at the post office. Four photographs are required, one for each form and one for files. All enemy aliens are urged to complete registration promptly.
Weather permitting the Jersey Joiks meet the Spare Parts at Firemen's Field this evening at 6 30. The Joiks seek a sixth win in seven games in the Gas tineau Channel League while the Spare Parts hold the cellar with one win and five losses.
The U S Bureau reports a Monday June 29 weather outlook with a maximum temperature of 67 and a minimum of 43. Light to moderate conditions expected with no significant precipitation noted for the area.
The Senate after a 31 minute discussion approved and sent back to the House the 42 billion dollar Army supply measure the largest appropriation ever submitted to Congress. The act carries a minor amendment prohibiting advertisements in Army camp newspapers.
Bobby Turoff, son of Mr and Mrs L W Turoff, formerly of Juneau, is recovering from serious injuries after a Montgomery Alabama auto accident. He sustained a broken leg above the knee, walks with crutches, and is expected to be fully recovered in three to four months. The family relocated to Alabama when his father was transferred there.

Cairo reports Axis columns have advanced past Eldaba, 75 miles east of Matruh and 100 miles from Alexandria. Eldaba is the second British Eighth Army stronghold in Egypt, with a desert bottleneck narrowing to about 45 miles. It is unclear if the advance is a large push or isolated units. The rapid move threatens Alexandria and the Nile Delta.
MOSCOW June 30 the Russian radio said Britain and Russia signed an agreement to deliver British military supplies to Russia on a dead-lease basis. NEW YORK Wilmer Allison, former Davis Cup tennis star, promoted to major in the Army signal corps for his amateur radio knowledge. SUY DEFENSE STAMPS
Gen John L Dewitt Western Defense Command announces strict military control of civilian travel to and from Alaska effective July 11. Civilian entry requires a military pass for official business legitimate employment and return of Alaska residents. Passes require approvals from Alaska Travel Control in Seattle and from Maj Gen Buckner to depart. Children under 16 are exempt if accompanied. Fingerprints and photos are required. permits deny entry to enemy aliens or those deemed a security risk.
Tokyo June 30 strong east and west drives aim to clear the Chingse from the Cheklang Kjangsi Railway area. Japanese pincers near Chungking threaten contacts as rains ease after the heaviest storm in a decade. Chungking reports Japanese attacks 80 miles south of Nanjang in Klangsi Province with some gains.
Tom Dyer reports 21 000 pounds of scrap rubber turned in at Juneau Motors and Cowling and Davlin Co to date. Campaign extended to July 10 with volunteers to remove old tires from autos. Juneau Boy Scouts add over a ton. Rotary plans Fourth of July parade float and decorates July 3. USO drive aims for 2500 dollars. Sundborg new Rotary president to lead next meeting.
Three Juneau Boy Scout troops took part in a rubber salvage contest and turned in about two tons of scrap. Troop 612 sponsored by Northern Light Presbyterian Church led with 2,295 pounds, followed by Troop 613 American Legion with 1,206 pounds and Troop 614 Salvation Army with 983 pounds.
Hawaiian Air Force Headquarters announced that Army bombers struck Wake Island last night under a full moon and leveled all surface targets. The report notes heavy bombardment and emphasizes total surface destruction achieved by the operation.
President Roosevelt via Budget Director Smith ordered all government departments in Washington and nationwide to collect every possible ounce of rubber scrap. The campaign extends to July 10. Secretary Tekes walked out of the White House with a large rubber mat linked to a dispute over Interior rubber contributions.
June 30 The Senate confirmed the reappointment of George F Alexander as Judge of the First Judicial Division in Alaska with headquarters at Juneau. The Senate also confirmed William Mahoney as United States Marshal of the First Judicial Division and Joseph McDonald as United States Marshal of the Fourth Judicial Division with headquarters at Fairbanks.
Washington June 80 The House voted a second time to end the CCC program. A roll call vote of 220 to 121 blocked conferees from aligning with the Senate on continuing activity in the new fiscal year with a 76 million dollar appropriation under the labor federal security bill and Secretary Henry Wallace’s request.
Passengers aboard Alaska Coastal Airlines traveled between Juneau Sitka and Haines yesterday afternoon with a roster including Col. John L. Parley Lt. Col. John Harry and several others. Returning to Juneau were G. H. Pifer and additional travelers from Sitka. Subsequent departures listed for Tenakee and Sitka included Leonard McParland J Driscoll E Clayton Kenneth McGill Jim Bertelsen. Ketchikan to Maines travelers named Terrill J. Anderson William Lattin Clifford R. Phillips Donald B. McGillivray Joe Diamond Ernest M. Bichten.

In a mass evacuation the U S War Department orders all Japanese to leave 20 northern California counties. About 2180 people are affected and will be sent directly to the Tile Lake Relocation Center at Newhall for resettlement.
A wire from Bud Brown to Elwood McLain states all Junéau men at Dutch Harbor are okay. Brown, longtime Junéau resident, recently left local bank work to join defense duties at Dutch Harbor.
In Sun Valley Idaho a fish story unfolds as Dolores Hegstrom hooks a trout at Mag a¢ Dam. The fish had swallowed an earlier hook and a separate leader dangling in its mouth. The fresh hook snagged the girl’s line, creating the unlikely catch in this season’s opening tale.
