The Senate, after more than 14 hours of debate, voted 50 to 0 to authorize 1.8 billion dollars in relief for the upcoming fiscal year. Administrations leaders pushed through amendments as they sought a swift accord with the House's 1.735 billion dollar relief bill before the midnight deadline.
The Juneau Chamber of Commerce told members it does not engage in politics after a local press account misrepresented a letter to the U S Chamber as partisan. Chairman H K Faulkner said the letter to the National Chamber reflected members views on taxes social security the Wagner Act wages and hours railroads not political actions. A dredging committee report followed a conference with officials including Mayor Harry S Lucas and Joe Crosson.
The Senate approved eight million dollars for an Ogden Utah air depot and four million for an air base in A as part of the War Department defense program.
Monterey California June 29 Harry Leon Wilson renowned humorist died in his sleep after years of illness. Born May 1 1867 in Oregon he rose from a stenographer to editor of Puck magazine and author of Zig Zag Dales and The Spenders. He praised New York as a city of contrasts and left the stage after a substantial advance to pursue writing full time. Continued on Page Seven.
Preston Grover Washington recalls early forest fire season in the Rocky Mountains and Pacific slope. He describes westward firefighting as personal work for ranchers, loggers, and forest crews, the strain on telephone lines for news, and the dangers faced by workers in remote burn areas.
W D Gross announces federal funds will finance completing the five story Front Street project between the First National Bank and Percys Cafe. The new structure will be fireproof with reinforced concrete and steel and house a 1200 seat Gross theatre, 36 apartments, a penthouse and ground floor shops. The Coliseum Theatre will operate as a lower priced venue. Construction aims for completion in about ninety days with A W Quist as contractor and Juneau visits anticipated.
President Roosevelt signed a large appropriation bill providing 305 million dollars for non military War Department functions. The act funds flood control river and harbor improvements and related projects as part of the department's activities.
Japan enforces a naval blockade on Wenchow and Foochow in South China as the Associated Press reports. Authorities notified foreign powers of the action aimed at pressuring China. Details on American or British vessels present and further steps remain unclear.
Ray Olson, a fugitive killer of two deputy sheriffs, was shot to death today by four possemen led by Constable Ernest Moore at Lake Namakagon near the Wheatley Anderson ranch as he tried to flee in a rowboat. He had been wounded since June 17.
The Wall Street Journal reports a reduced quarterly dividend for Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company from 30 cents to 15 cents. The payment is due August 1 for stock on record July 3, reflecting earnings below those of the prior year.
Washington June 29 The Treasury Department lowers the foreign silver price to 38 cents an ounce from 38 and a half cents. Secretary Morgen-thau says the rate will mirror the London market. Purchases of foreign silver after July 1 are forbidden by Senate legislation.
Scores from today show the National League results with Boston defeating New York 8 to 2 and Chicago beating St. Louis 7 to 6. In the American League Philadelphia toppled Boston 8 to 6 while New York prevailed 7 to 1 over Washington. St. Louis defeated Chicago 9 to 5 with Chicago scoring 3 in the seventh.
Moscow June 29. Fifteen Japanese Manchukuo bombers escorted by fighters attacked Outer Mongolia in a border raid. The Tass communique says two planes were shot down by Soviet Mongol anti aircraft guns and crashed in Mongolian territory. one ship damaged, casualties not stated.
Senator Ernest W. Gibson of Vermont introduces a bill to admit colonists from any nation to Alaska if they have never engaged in subversive activity and have abandoned other allegiances. The number equals the unfilled U S immigration quota, aiming to defend Alaska and boost regional markets.
Hollywood recalls comedian Bobby Vernon, age 42, known for pie throwing and early work with Roscoe Arbuckle. He later appeared in about 200 comedies before his death in Hollywood California on June 29.
Washington Fane 29 reports the Senate approved a 60 day extension beyond noon July first for claim holders to begin required development work. The Senate did not extend to October 1, so the House must act, after which the bill goes to President Roosevelt. The House had earlier voted for a nine day extension.
A brief fire at the Ketchikan Spruce Mills power house and boiler room left the extent of damage undetermined as of Monday night. The main steam turbine, valued at 25,000 dollars, may be ruined. it is being dismantled to assess damage. The mill remains closed while utilities figure power supply options for the city.
W. F. Roberts, aged 74, a long time resident of the Pioneers' Home in Sitka since 1923, left June 15 to return to Rampart to prospect, according to Superintendent Eller Hanses.

The destroyers Case and Tucker of the U S Navy with 384 officers men and 102 University of Washington students and 260 enlisted personnel will dock at the Government dock in Juneau tomorrow at 4 PM. They have been at Sitkoh Bay on Chatham Straits and are under Lieut Commander M E Curts. The ships will depart Monday at 4 AM after a brief stay.
