Jamestown North Dakota June 27 One of the worst drought stories unfolds in Statham County where fertile prairies have turned to a barren landscape. Fields are blackened with little rain for a year as wheat withers and cattle wander seeking scant forage. Trucks haul livestock abnormal loads as blight spreads across three fourths of the state. Fifty three counties may yield only five harvests. farm families abandon homes and dred hands depart. The last rain in the area was in 1934, a Statham County farmer notes, after lighting the fields and grasshoppers feed on what remains.
