The Canadian Navy reports a Canadian built merchant ship was brought safely to a west coast port following a determined attack by a Japanese submarine. There were no casualties, but details are withheld for security reasons. The attack occurred off Canada's West Coast.
The Japanese liner Asama Maru left Yokohama on June 26 carrying 416 passengers from North and South America to be exchanged for Japanese nationals interned in the Western Hemisphere. Among those aboard are 142 diplomats and 274 civilians.
Secretary Ickes pressed for a South to Middle West oil pipeline to save tankers and cut submarine risk. War Production Board rejected Somervell’s skepticism, cabled Britain, and the pipeline was ordered. Willkie’s Senate luncheon with Republicans was reportedly cordial, though later continued.
An eye witness relato describes the April 18 daylight raid on Tokyo as a complete surprise that panicked residents and revealed Japanese officials unable to intercept the U S planes. He notes targets between Tokyo and Yokohama were hit while Tokyo’s inflammable urban core was spared.

Berlin reports encirclement southeast of Moscow with 21,000 Russians captured along with 100 tanks and 250 guns.
Ottawa reports that several complete squadrons of the Royal Canadian Air Force are now operating in the Alaska Islands region. Air Minister Power announced the expansion during a statement in Ottawa today and urged the public to buy defense stamps.
Washington reports that the so called Nazi precursor of hysteria Dame Rumer fuels rumors across the United States. The FBI traces sources in a vast study of rumor, showing misperceptions from farm hands to canaries and water supplies. The piece notes many rumors prove unfounded and describes investigative efforts continuing.
A sturdy American cargo vessel with half its starboard side blown by an Axis torpedo completed a remarkable 12 day voyage home to a Gulf port. Only two crewmen were seriously injured. the ship to sail again after repairs. The vessel was torpedoed May 22 in the Caribbean amidships on the starboard side. Columbia was 1900 miles of the Pacific and 1100 in the Atlantic.
June 26 reports say Royal Air Force set large fires in Bremen during a major raid, a likely record aerial bombardment. The attack involved over 1,000 planes in one force and followed earlier raids on Cologne and Essen, with secondary strikes on airfields in the Low Countries. A battleship line is described, noting a metaphor about a ship resting on the heart of a swell.
