Pacific brief reports nine of 11 crewmen safe after a B-29 Superfortress ditched 140 miles southeast of Guam while returning to its base from a simulated bombing run on Okinawa. Munsee tug directed a surface search. one survivor located on a lifeboat. names withheld.
Juneau and Airport readings show highs in the high sixties and low seventies with cooler nights. Forecast calls for variable clouds and cooler conditions tonight and Sunday with a low around 50 and high near 65.
President Truman, who has logged more flying miles than any other president, first flew to Baltimore to dedicate a new airport then headed home to Missouri for the weekend aboard the Independence. Statisticians estimate his total miles in office at over 83,000, with this trip adding a few thousand.
Congressman John S Wood of Georgia denounces Pearson as an architar and slanderer on the House floor after admitting his assistant took a $1000 fee from Ralph Stanfield, a boy struck by an Army truck. In Chicago switchmen on five major lines including Chicago Rock Island Pacific Chicago Great Western Western Pacific Great Northern and Denver and Rio Grande Western plan a strike tomorrow with many roads declaring they will not operate.
A brilliant fire ball lit the southern sky around 7 40 pm seen from Montgomery Alabama to Fort Worth Texas with reports of a fiery streak. A jet from Langley Field was flying southward during the sighting fueling theories it was a comet tail or aircraft vapor trail.
The Library of Congress outlines an economy plan to route pencil stubs via divisions to reading rooms. Nine staff members submit stubs to divisional secretaries who forward them to the supply officer, who issues them on demand to stacks and reader services. The spring house-cleaning yielded 168 stubs. Arthur E. Tunley of Skagway was a guest at Baranot Hotel.

In London an intruder broke into Queen Mary’s home Marlborough House early today injuring the housekeeper Mrs Alice Knight seven knife wounds and the helper Mrs Winifred Ralph with black eyes. A 26 year old Irish gardener Gerald O'Brien was arrested and charged with robbery attempt and assault.
Fairfield California June 24 Col William Brett 35 commander of the 8th Strategic Heavy Bomb Group and his wife Polly were killed today in a automobile collision near North Sacramento The group deputy commander Lt Col Buzz Celie Jr and his wife Josephine were injured critically The other car was driven by John Gorman 20 of Sacramento with Merle Benson 18 also of Sacramento both injured with severe cuts
A 24 year old apprentice florist, Thomas Edward Jones, was slain with an ax during a night shift at a Seattle flower shop. The two robbers fled the back of the shop after taking 44.50 dollars, reported by shop owners Charles and Mrs Cole. Coroner deputies estimated the death occurred late last night.
The amphibious attack cargo vessel USS Washburn sails from San Diego for the 1950 Point Barrow Alaska resupply mission. It is joined by three other craft en route to rendezvous with expedition ships in Seattle after fueling at Port Hueneme and Port Malibu. Point Barrow, center of a 35000 square mile naval petroleum reserve in the Arctic, relies on annual August supply runs during ice-free windows.

Six B 36 bombers conducted a nearly 38 hour relay covering about 10 000 miles to Honolulu in the first mass flight of the six engined planes over water. Brig Gen Irvine the mission commander said they would practice simulated bombing on American cities on return to the mainland. Eight planes started from Fairfield Suisun California with one coming directly to Honolulu and another diverting after engine trouble to land there.
Pacific Northern Airlines carried 15 passengers here yesterday and sent nine to the west ward. Arrivals from Anchorage include G. H. Watson, his wife and David, Ken Green, Mrs. Ray Clute, M. Holkeslad, Allen May, Mrs. Topliff and infant, and Herman Hoppe. Cordova boarders include Harold Schultz and seven Seattle bound travelers, while Arthur Lapp, Judy Remmer, Norris P. Dorothy M. Bell of Juneau captured the $1000 first prize in the Territory-wide Alaskagram contest shared across six Alaska newspapers. John F. Walsh Jr. of Fort Richardson won $500, Bud Olson of Petersburg $250, and Joseph L. Matthews of Elmendorf Field $100. Three $50 prizes went to T. O. Hansen of Petersburg, Phyllis Helstrom of Fairbanks, and Richard W. DeWeil, an Alaska Communications System radio technician.
Col. J. Monroe Johnson, 72, head of the Interstate Commerce Commission, arrived in Washington claiming to feel fine after collapsing in Anchorage yesterday. He attributed the incident to a digestive upset and said he had been touring Japanese railways with Gen. Omar Bradley and Secretary Louis Johnson. The two former Rainbow Division officers recalled MacArthur inviting Johnson to the trip, noting their WWI roles.
France's government fell as the national assembly voted 352 to 230 against Premier Georges Bidault on a confidence issue. Opposition included Socialists De Gaullists and Communists, with the move seen as potentially hastening a French election.

A DC-4 four engine air coach with 58 aboard disappeared last night in a thunderstorm over Lake Michigan. Oil slicks and wreckage were found east of Milwaukee but no definite trace of the aircraft or occupants. Fog hampered search by Army Navy Coast Guard planes and surface craft from Kenosha Racine and Milwaukee. The plane was en route from New York to the Pacific Northwest with crew of Capt Lind Vern Wolfe and Bonnie Feldman and passenger K Nielsen bound for Anchorage.
A 36 foot Sea Home from Morra Bay sank 20 miles out after colliding with the 45 foot Linda of Beattle. Harbor officials report hundreds of boats in the tuna rush for top grade fish at $400 a ton. Two crewmen, D. J. Work and William Hanson, were rescued by the Linda.
Steamers listed with sailing times and destinations include Skringess Aanaee due in port at 3 20 this afternoon and sailing for Skagway at 11 30 from Seattle, with arrival tomorrow in Alaska. Baronof and Princess Kathleen are set for Vancouver departures tonight and Tuesday respectively, while Prince George and Princess Norah plan to sail from Vancouver on Tuesday and Wednesday. Aleutian is scheduled southbound this Sunday from the westward route.
