June 24 report from Red Star notes the German wedge into Kharkov defenses with a massed force of 200 tanks at one point. The onslaught grows in fury as tanks planes and infantry are committed, but the Reds say no real success yet.
June 24 advised Finance Minister Isley of Canada we have far to go before victory is in sight as he warned Canadians face a sharp increase in income taxes. The government intends to take money from weekly pay checks and refund part of it with two percent interest after the war.
The Navy requisitioned private yachts including Doris Duke Cromwell’s yacht Kailani after Pearl Harbor. The government offered fair compensation set by the Maritime Commission, but Cromwell’s agent Swearingen demanded 35000 dollars for Kailani plus press items. The offer to dock for inspection was rejected and negotiations halted as authorities demanded immediate surrender.
Alaska Delegate Anthony J. Dimond introduced legislation in Congress urging immediate construction of a coastal highway to Alaska. He cited wartime needs for a supply route to Aleutian Islands and proposed a $23 million appropriation for the Prince George to White Horse segment.

Washington June 24 The House Ways and Means Committee voted to raise rates for second class postage periodicals and advertising matter to cover handling costs. Rep Jere Cooper of Tennessee cited an estimated two to six million dollar annual loss in delivering this mail. The plan would lift second class rates affecting newspapers by about 78 million dollars annually.
A severe quake struck North Island near Wellington today, the worst tremor felt in years. The quake centered in the Wellington district rattled homes and caused alarms across the coastal capital.

London reported Production Minister Oliver Lyttelton stating U S war production surpassed Britain’s reach by 40 to 50 days earlier than expected. He said U S and British aircraft output exceeded Germany Italy and Japan, and that future operations will share theatres with equal U S priority for supplies.
Ten thousand Navy casualties are tallied with the latest casualty list totaling 98 dead eight wounded and 200 missing. The Army reports 796 deaths in battle and 920 wounded. The Navy list covers service from May 11 to June 6 including Navy Marine Corps and Coast Guard casualties.
