London report notes former premier Tisza told the Austrian Parliament that in many Hungarian provinces only a third to a quarter of the required food is on hand.
Misses Emma and Katherine Lansing sisters of Secretary Robert Lansing of the State Department direct a Red Cross canteen in France. They hid in a champagne cellar during German bombardment of their village on the French and British front, surviving until the shelter could be closed and they could depart.

An evening report states that American forces at dawn yesterday attacked German trenches and machine gun positions on the Cantigny front. The garrison was ordered to hold at all costs, and the enemy suffered heavy losses by gunfire and bayonet. The Americans took a number of prisoners.
Berlin reports a war bulletin stating that north of Albert and southwest of Noyon near Chateau Thierry enemy attacks were repelled with heavy losses.

Paris reports via Havas News Agency that the transport Santanan sailing from Bizerta to Malta was torpedoed. Of the 2,150 soldiers and Native workmen aboard, 1,512 were saved. Malta, the fortified English port near Italy, is the destination noted. The dispatch suggests a British transport loss as ships move to support operations in Italy or the southern region.
Aberdeen Miass June 21 Lieut. Leo M Haines and Lieut. Francis M Roberts are dead and Lieut. Robert C Moore may die as the result of an aeroplane collision at an altitude of 1700 feet.
In Washington on June 21, Col. E. A. Root received orders directing his assignment to the Philippines, outlining a shift in command duties and overseas duties for the U S forces in the Pacific region.
Miss Marguerite Kennelly of Port Chester New York joins the American Fund for French Wounded. She drives a car from Paris to a base hospital with $600 raised among friends for the Deaf Dumb and Blind Asylum at Arras. She is cousin to U S Army Captain William Kennelly serving in the trenches.

Washington June 21 Representative Kelly of Pennsylvania introduced a resolution declaring war on Bulgaria and Turkey. The measure was referred to the Foreign Affairs Committee. If the Tabriz outrages are deemed acts by official Turkish forces, the pillaging of the American hospital under the Spanish minister’s protest could trigger automatic war.
Washington June 21 The American Marines casualty list lists 127 names with ten killed in action. The Army list shows 38 names with six killed in action. No Alaskans have appeared on any of the published lists yet.

Boris Bakhmetoff, the Russian ambassador, compelled the dismissal of Dr G V Lao Monossoff, head of the Russian Stateway Commission to the United States, after the former issued a statement on Russian conditions that drew wide comment.

New York reports Secretary Baker telegram indicating American soldiers will join Italians and British on the Italian front. Rome dispatch notes Austrian offensives failing along the line. In the Piave sector allies gain ground while fighting intensifies. French and Italian forces recapture Pennar Bertigo Castelunga and seize 200 Austrians south and east of Asiago.
June 21 Berlin residents attempted escape from Germany in two aeroplanes. One craft landed in Denmark with two aboard including a University of Berlin professor who fled the capital citing the condition there. The other was shot down in the Baltic by German guard ships.

General Manager George T. Jackson reports the Alaska Gastineau gold mine is in better shape than in years and May Juneau’s position as a top mining camp looks brighter. Mines run at one third capacity but cover expenses while labor shortages remain severe at Alaska Juneau and Treadwell. Conditions are improving and the worst may be over.
Washington dispatch confirms Daniel D. Pullen Alaska’s first West Point cadet has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of a Yankee Tank Corps on the front. Col Pullen, son of Mrs Harriet S. Pullen of Skagway, spent much of his life in Alaska and earned broad respect for his service.

Los Angeles report says Walter Miller, the reigning middleweight world wrestling champion, defeated Eddie O Connell of Portland last night by throwing him in a bout that showcased Miller's mastery and retained his title status.
Italian defenses hold Montcello Plateau as rains swell Piave floods hampering Austrian advance. Italian headquarters report continued pressure on the Piave front with plans for attacks on Bretna river and mountain districts as Austrians pivot toward widening rifts toward the plains. First Yankee Flyer notes success over the Piave bridge with two holes punched in the Austrian crossing.
Premier Orlando told Parliament that Austrian efforts to widen their northeastern Montcello salient failed. Austrian forces crossed the Monte Belluna and Suzenga Railway in the south but were checked near Nivers station. Italians gained ground on the Lower Piave while enemy losses were described as enormous.
Baltimore June 21 Two soldiers died in a premature trench mortar explosion at Aberdeen Maryland. Secretary Baker and several ordnance officers stood under 300 yards away but were unhurt as the blast occurred in a bomb proof enclosure.
