Voters weigh one percent sales tax in Juneau election
By 3 p.m. today 535 Juneau voters had cast ballots on a one percent municipal sales tax ordinance. City officials called it a good vote for a one question election as the City Hall polling place stayed open until 7 p.m. Mayor Hendrickson predicted approval above 500 votes. Labor groups opposed the tax as a consumer burden. The measure needs 55 percent to pass and would fund current and future bonded debt from sales and services over 35 cents. If approved, it ends when bonded debt is paid off, giving voters power to continue or end the tax with future bond decisions.
