Senate passes compromise on draft in Congress action

Washington June 1 The Senate approved a compromise draft after a long filibuster as House and Senate wrangle over foreign aid and other end of session bills. Speaker Martin warned adjournment may be blocked despite a major battle over a farm price, immigration, and government spending bills.

Senate blocks Alaska steamship subsidy measure

Washington June 19 Senate blocked passage of a bill to extend subsidized steamship service to Alaska after Senator Langer objected citing Alaska governor Gruening’s opposition. Magnuson Cain and Capehart urged approval to prevent chaos in Alaska as the law neared expiration June 30. A House version extending to February 28 was blocked earlier by Rep Weichel Rohier.

Nordic at Storage With Large Catch

The Nordic skippered by Ole Jostel brought in the first large load of halibut since the season closed in area 2, landing 54,000 pounds at Juneau Cold Storage yesterday. The fish sold at 189 medium, eight for chick, and 18.9 for large. The Isis, led by J. C. Martinsen, landed an 11,000 pound salmon haul. Sanna Jungnita and Ida Jungnitz from Hawthorn, N. J., are Baranot Hotel.

Skagway Mayor Carroll Attends Baranof House Event

Skagway Mayor C. A. Carroll was a guest at the Baranof House in Skagway, enjoying the city’s hospitality during a regional visit. The event highlighted local governance and civic ties between Skagway and Arrangements for future cooperation were discussed.

PAA brings 20 from south 22 are flown out

Twenty persons arrived from Seattle and 22 left Juneau yesterday aboard Pan American flights. From Seattle travelers included Mrs. Charles Downs and others, while a large list departed for Seattle. Edward Cunningham, registered from White Plains, is visiting and staying at the Baranoff Hotel.

Platform Drafters At Work At Republican Convention

Philadelphia June 19 Republican Convention platform drafters favored a farm group plan to lower farm price supports after this year and curb high food costs. A farm plank was advanced by a subcommittee and will be refined to the 1500 word limit. Endorsed also was a strong civil rights plank including anti poll tax and anti-lynching measures and equal opportunity in the armed services.

Juneau Council Accepts Bid for Street Work Project

The Juneau City Council voted to accept a 189 508 82 dollar bid from Lytle and Green Construction Co of Des Moines Iowa for street improvements. Funding comes from a 150 000 dollar bond issue approved by voters and 33 000 dollars in war bonds. a roughly 10 000 dollar deficit will be covered by current revenues. The panel discussed federal grants but noted good finances limit aid. The council also called for bids to widen Fourth Street by 44 inches before the Federal Building and Memorial Library site, and to round Fifth and Main for fire truck access. Bids are due within 10 days.

Stockton Girl Miss California Selected in Beach Beauty Contest

Filibuster Ends As Senate Passes Draft Bill

The Senate ended an all night filibuster on a draft measure to require 21 months service for men aged 19 to 26, starting 90 days after final enactment. The vote moved the bill to the House amid protests over passage legality and a heated Senate floor clash.
