Tientsin Shooting Reported Amid Concession Tension

Briton Held by Japanese Is Released

French Sub Goes Down With 63 Aboard

Dragger Recovery of Tweed's Body From Channel

The body of pilot Charnel Tweed, died in a Yukon Southern seaplane crash, was recovered from the Channel after dark last night. Dr. W. M. Whitehead confirmed drowning with burns and bruises. Chief Dan Ralston and a dragging crew found the body at 10 30 p m as wreckage was raised by Jake Cropley’s pile driver and Snuffy boat crew.

Longshoremen and Warehousemen push for six hour day

In San Francisco on June 16 CIO International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union members voted to demand a straight six hour day, higher wages, and improved working conditions across the Pacific Coast waterfront. They seek recognition of bona fide picket lines and lift board provisions, with Alaska Longshoremen largely uncounted. Separately, Demmer F. Boyer and family traveled through Juneau en route to Willamina Oregon for the summer after arriving on Elecna and departing on the North Coast Route.

Army Engineers to fly Alaska for new air base site study

Board of Army Engineers will fly to Alaska on June 22 to study sites for an Army air base planned for next year. The group will visit Ketchikan Juneau Sitka Anchorage Kodiak Unalaska Bethel Nome and Fairbanks. Delegate Dimond says Fairbanks remains favored. The trip is described as a double check.

Plane crash survivor in Juneau hospital with pilot dead

In the Juneau harbor tragedy, pilot Charles Tweed, 40, was killed as a gasoline laden plane crashed after striking a dolphin on Douglas Island. Mechanic Cecil Pickell, 23, survived with severe shock and told how two boys, Jerry Cole and Wayne McGee, rescued him from the burning craft. Pickell praised the youths for their courage and recounted the fatal moment and the explosion that drove him from the wreck, while noting Tweed did not survive.

NEA Delegates Bask in Alaska Cruise Welcome

About 200 editors from small town papers toured Alaska as NEA leaders weighed a possible tile change. They visited Alaska Juneau mine and Mendenhall Glacier, then gathered for a record luncheon at the Baranof Hotel hosted by Juneau Chamber of Commerce officials.
