Congress Adjournment Delayed As Deficiency Bill Reaches End

Washington June 16 Joint Senate and House Conference Committee reached a compromise on the 290 million deficiency appropriations delaying adjournment of Congress tonight The Senate completed action on the spending and lending program and the measure returned to the House for minor amendments A key obstacle was a ten million dollar disputed provision President Roosevelt moved up his departure to New England for his youngest son Johns wedding Saturday night In a separate vote the House overrode the Presidents veto on a bill extending low interest rates on certain Federal Farm loans delaying adjournment further.

Congress May Be Called In Extra Session

Washington June 16 Chairman John J. OConnor of New York said Congress may be called into an extra session soon if the financial collapse of several large railroads occurs. He warned failure to enact legislation to aid the rail systems poses deep concern due to the millions of employees involved.

Mine Assessment Suspension Bill Passed by House

The House approved a bill to suspend for one more year the $100 assessment work requirement on mining claims by location. It moves to the Senate for Alaska extension. Navy cruiser Louisville due July 6 for Independence Day

The Navy cruiser Louisville will arrive by Juneau on July 6 but cannot reach in time for the Fourth of July celebration. Navy ships will be at Sitka Seward and Cordova for the holiday. $10,000 Fire At Ketchikan

Ketchikan Alaska June 16 Larry Reichmann, 29, a deckhand from South Bend Washington, was seriously burned in a $10,000 explosion and fire aboard the cannery tender William T Muir moored at the wharf factory dock. Fire Chief Stanley Adams suspects gasoline vapor in the forward part of the 90 foot tender caused the blast. Reichmann stood in a companion way when the blast occurred as his clothes were torn off and the ship's sides blew one foot away from the deck.
