At Quantico Truman observes a display of modern combat power. Marines seize a fortified beach with rifles flame throwers tanks and aircraft. He then sees helicopters landing troops in combat zones using rapid takeoffs and cargo sling operations for tanks and howitzers.
The Navy pushes to reveal more about guided missiles while arguing they could render bombers obsolete. Facts include radar guidance that corrects five miles off target, Joint Chiefs backing mass development, plans to convert cruisers and submarines, underwater missiles, and easy aircraft defense. In Skagway Alaska on June 13 a special election saw 197 voters reject the proposed sales tax ordinance by 111 against to 86 for. Property owners approved a 31 million bond for water and sewer upgrades with 106 for and 51 against, while the city authorized a 20 year franchise to Home Power Company with 84 for and 75 against and a lease of the Skagway Municipal Telephone System to a private party with 89 for and 72 against.
John Foster Dulles said he will travel to the Far East at the request of President Truman and Secretary Acheson to gather firsthand information with no negotiating mission. The trip begins from Minneapolis on a Northwest Airlines flight, with plans to reach Anchorage by noon. Dulles aims to report back and return around June 28, while Acheson’s advisor Sebald will precede him to Korea and Japan for talks on a Japanese peace treaty with Gen. Douglas MacArthur and Japanese leaders. Mildred Kershner and Margaret Ward of California visit the Baranof Hotel.
In southeast Portland a bank robber named Wayne Long, 25, was shot by an FBI agent as he fled the First National Bank branch at 10:18 am. Agent Leonard Frank was wounded in the arm, and Long lay on the street with a shattered arm. Police say there were 25 to 50 people inside during the attempted holdup.
President Chiang Kai-shek removes three brothers in law from the Central Bank of China board. T. V. Soong, T. L. Soong, and Dr. H. H. Kung, all connected to Madame Chiang, are dismissed by presidential directive. The note also mentions Gastineau D. 8, Tuifourd of Ketchikan staying at Gastineau Hotel.
A vast Pacific haze, possibly linked to Mauna Loa’s third eruptive week, stretched thousands of miles from Wake Island to south of Honolulu. Geiger counters showed no radioactivity, meteorologists cited volcanic dust and temperature inversions, while navigation and aviation operated under instrument flight rules as the haze cleared over Honolulu.
The Senate approved nominations for Alaska postmasterships including Doris Wirsching Annette James Evans Met Jakatla James McLean Nome. Donald Aska of the Interior Department is registered at the Burnet Hotel in Washington DC.
D E Skinner, Alaska Steamship Co vice president, writes in Seattle on June 13 defending the company against Attorney General McGrath's indictment claim that it controls Alaska's economy. He argues the assertion is ludicrous, notes the firm's service to minor ports, cites regulatory oversight, and lists competitors to deny monopoly. He vows to expose attacks amid a criminal trial.
Seattle on June 15 Western economists weigh gold market moves as Donald H. McLaughlin of Homestake Mining Co. warns of a thin free market. He notes the free price now sits just above 35 an ounce and discusses satellite country usage, possible Chinese sales, and a step by step plan to restore the gold standard to lift production. He cites Homestake’s output at 15 million dollars annually, about 75 percent of prewar levels.
Pioneer Bob Keeny, resident of Juneau, returns after six years away. He attends a Rebekah meeting in the Odd Fellows hall and renews old acquaintances. The Keenys have traveled along the coast and are now settled in Settle. Mrs Keeny stays home.
The International Fisheries Commission announced halibut fishing will end in three Pacific areas at midnight July 5 completing the regular season. Area Two Area Three and Area Four quotas are 25 5 million 28 million and 5 million pounds respectively with minor catch limits in other zones. A limited half but take will be allowed after close of the season up to November 15 with hook and line vessels allowed to land one halibut for every seven pounds of other fish.
Britain's lawmakers staggered home after a 16 and a half hour session in which the labor government won nine victories over the conservatives and others seeking to repeal gasoline taxes. The tally since March 6 shows 22 labor wins and one loss, with outlook favorable for continuing into next year.
Juneau and vicinity continue fair with high clouds tonight and Friday. Little temperature change. lowest tonight near 49 and Friday's high around 68. Precipitation shows no rain in the past 24 hours for Juneau. totals since July 1 show 11.89 inches at Juneau and 46.10 inches at the airport.
Washington June 15 Senator Taft of Ohio said action on Hawaii and Alaska statehood bills depends on Democratic leadership after GOP policy committee meeting. He noted five or six vital measures must be acted on before adjournment while Lucas has yet to release a complete list. Lucas aims for July 31 adjournment, any unread bills die with the session.
Democratic tax drafters, after a secret huddle, near agreement on a four billion dollar excise tax cut bill that could avoid a presidential veto. Plan to slash excise taxes on jewelry, furs, luggage, and more, while raising income taxes on large corporations to raise approximately 500 million annually. July 1 House passage targeted to beat Senate action before adjournment.
